Southern Water is preparing to carry out a major repair on the main sewer pipe that runs from Ryde to Sandown next week following a burst at Appley.
The utility company says it has been tackling a burst rising main on Appley Road which is affecting the pipe that runs all the way to Sandown’s Wastewater Treatment Works. This pipe carries all of Ryde’s waste, and waste from surrounding areas.
Engineers have already mitigated the environmental impact of the burst from the sewer through digging a sump where tankers can collect the wastewater to take it to Sandown by road. It’s thought the actual repair will be taking place in a field adjacent to the main road, which currently has temporary traffic lights in place.
Now, preparations are underway to shut down the Appley Transfer Station on Wednesday evening (4th December) – from 18:00 – to enable the repairs to take place.
When the repair gets underway, 20 tankers will be in use to shuttle Ryde’s waste from Appley to Sandown. A total of 28 holding tanks will also be utilised.
Appley Car Park has been closed in its entirety today (Friday) as a convoy of tanks arrives from the mainland.
Although it is advised the car park will remain closed until 11th December, Southern Water says this is simply to allow a contingency should bad weather – which increases flows – disrupt plans to proceed with the repair as planned on Wednesday.
A spokesperson for Southern Water has said:
“We’re sorry for the disruption in the Appley area following a burst sewer.
“Our teams are at the site in Appley Road and have put a plan in place to protect the environment while we plan for a major repair to take place on December 4 in the evening and overnight.
“Due to the nature of the repair, it will cause further disruption and require us to use a large number of tankers which are currently located at Appley Car Park, following agreement with Isle of Wight Council.
“We have contacted key stakeholders in the area and will send letters to nearby residents and text messages with further information in the coming days.”
It’s not the first time that this crucial pipe has failed… in February this year engineers worked for over a month at West Lane, Brading to repair the same sewer pipe. In January 2021, the sewer dramatically collapsed just below the pumping station at Appley leading to a £7million, 15-month scheme to repair it.
OK so it’s going to cost a lot of money, but that’s what we pay for in our bills, plus if Southern water actually upgraded our systems instead of paying shareholders there wouldn’t be a issue
I can’t wait to pay more for this sh!t service.
Yet they keep wanting to build more and more
Properties on this crumbling island.
This field is the one that Captiva want to start building the first of the 475 new homes on Westridge farm. If the sewer system can’t cope now then it needs a major upgrade before more house are built..
Why don’t Captiva Homes p*ss off and start
building more homes needed on the mainland.
The island is falling apart.
I moved to Ryde three years ago and every year there has been a sewer collapse between Ryde and Sandown, all have resulted in closing Appley car park for long periods.
The first was on the esplanade with raised pipe work.
Then in Brading.
Now in Appley.
More house means more cr@p, maybe the house builders should fund a new sewer before building more houses.
The drainage in Ryde is sh*t, IW Council
should put a stop to new homes being built in
areas that cannot cope.
Also the infrastructure on the island is poor.
Totally agree re Captiva but sadly brown envelopes speak louder than integrity and common sense
