Motorists travelling between Ryde and Newport are set to face yet more travel disruption as a major gas main replacement programme begins on Binstead Road this month, carrying on until May 2027.
SGN has confirmed it will carry out an extensive programme of works to replace ageing gas infrastructure along Binstead Road and several surrounding roads from Monday 16th March, involving a mixture of temporary traffic lights and road closures.
The first phase will see multi-way temporary traffic lights installed on Binstead Road between Thornbrough Close and Ryde Golf Club from 16th March for approximately 4 weeks.
The timing is likely to frustrate drivers further as the works begin just days after Southern Water’s ongoing project at Eleanor’s Grove is due to conclude. That scheme, which has already caused significant disruption in the area, is currently scheduled to finish on Friday 13th March. It also comes just weeks after a prolonged closure of Binstead Road for resurfacing, which caused travel chaos.
Following the initial phase, SGN will carry out further work between 13th April and 27th April, during which a road closure will be in place on Binstead Road at the junction with Spencer Road westbound. This stage includes the full replacement of the gas main at Stonepitts Close. However, these works coinside with Island Roads’ already-planned closure for road resurfacing.
Temporary traffic lights will then return to Binstead Road between 27th April and 29th May.

After this period, work will temporarily move away from the main road for the Summer. From 25th May until 9th October, phased road closures will be introduced on several residential streets including Church Road, Quarr Road, Pitts Lane and The Old Rectory, as engineers continue replacing sections of the gas network.
Traffic management will then return to Binstead Road later in the year. From 19th October until 18th December, 3-way temporary traffic lights will be installed on Binstead Hill and Binstead Road between Chapel Road and Ringwood Road.
The works will pause over the Christmas period but will resume on 4th January, running through to 25th May 2027. Further work will take place on Queens Road, Ringwood Road, Westwood Road and Thornbrough Close using give-and-take traffic management.
In total, the programme of works is expected to impact the area for around 14 months.
SGN says the work is necessary to maintain a safe and efficient gas supply to homes and businesses. Engineers will be replacing sections of the existing gas mains to help prevent leaks and ensure reliability in the future.

I thought with all the climate b@llocks gas was a thing of
the past, obviously NOT!
Great time to install speed cameras during the works.
I got lost after the first paragraph. Problem is no matter what they do there is nothing to see afterwards.
Road closures for months , reopen and you look and think so what merited it tobe closed after all this time .
With petrol prices set to rise as well motorists dont need the aggravation of having to drive extra on diversions which are confusing enough as well.
They’re replacing gas pipes under the road. What exactly do you want to be able to see after it’s done?
I smell a rat here some how. First a new water main, now a new gas main in the same area. What’s it all really for, hundreds of new home builds on Ryde golf course?
You are spot on, all part of the regeneration plans
for the island.
Just a simple thought, why didn’t both companies co operate and carry out these “vital” works at the same time?
Good theory, but this is the Isle of Wight, and things like that just don’t happen here!
You can say that again.
That’s common sense, the island lacks common sense.
