The weekend saw the Under-10s travel to Pulborough RFC in West Sussex for the scaled-back Battle of the Islands tournament.
While adverse weather meant the U9s were unable to play, the U10s took full advantage of the remaining playable pitches to face Pulborough, the Guernsey Rugby Academy and Jersey Rugby Club.
Vectis fielded 2 U10 teams who endured a tough start before finding their rhythm in a huge clash against a powerful Pulborough side. The squad delivered an exceptional performance featuring outstanding try-line defence, impressive phases of play and fiercely contested rucks, grinding out a hard-fought win.
Inspired by that result, Vectis went on to defeat Jersey in what became the true ‘Battle of the Islands’, sealing another nail-biting victory.
Coaches praised the squad’s development, giving special mentions to Elis for his superb try-saving defence and Wilf for his relentless tackling. Further praise was given to Lilly-Mae – the only girl in the mixed U10s squad – who once again delivered a dominant and eye-catching performance. Her impact serves as a reminder that rugby is a sport for everyone, with the club encouraging girls inspired by her achievements to get involved.
On home turf, the Vectis Colts (U18s) produced a commanding performance at the Isle of Wight RFC ground as they welcomed Romsey. Despite falling 13-0 behind in the opening half hour, Vectis regrouped and took control, surging to a convincing 48-18 victory.
Scrum-half Billy Edmunds was named Player of the Match for his composure and ability to keep the game flowing during a number of fractious moments. The Colts now look ahead to hosting Trojans RFC in 2 weeks’ time before the Christmas break.
