A Lymington-based crew has secured a big win in this year’s Morgan Cup, which saw over 100 boats race from Cowes to Guernsey in challenging conditions.
The annual offshore race, organised by the Royal Ocean Racing Club, started last Friday (27th June) from Cowes and took competitors around the Western Solent, past Les Hanois and on to St Peter Port – a course of around 130 nautical miles.
Tim Webb’s Swan 42 ‘Luna’ came out on top under IRC, beating strong competition from Tom Kneen’s ‘Sunrise IV’ and an Estonian-Finnish team on ‘Nola’. Luna’s crew, made up of sailors from Lymington, managed to stay ahead during tricky light winds near Guernsey.
Tim Webb, Skipper, has said:
“I’m still a bit stunned, but incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved.
“Our team has been together for a few years and always thought we had a shot. To win against such a big fleet feels amazing.”
Multihull Line Honours went to Peter Coote’s ‘Slinky Malinki’, with Privateer taking Monohull Line Honours by just 43 seconds over ‘Teasing Machine’. The Morgan Cup will be presented at a Royal Thames Yacht Club event later this year. The RORC season continues with the La Trinité – Cowes Race in early July.
