‘Will it take a child to be killed or seriously injured before anyone notices?’, a resident opposed to a large-scale housing development in Newport has asked.
Plans to extend a housing estate have raised fears among locals, who say their roads are already a ‘rat run’ and that they dread an increase in traffic – despite is always being clear that more houses would be built, indicated by incomplete roads.
Their comments come as plans are lodged, by developer Gallantgreen, for 20 more houses between Mountbatten Drive and Sylvan Drive, on the edge of Newport and Carisbrooke. There is also the potential for hundreds more on adjacent land.
Speaking at a meeting of Newport and Carisbrooke Community Council, earlier this week, a resident of Hazel Close said they have already approached local schools, the council, Police and Island Roads but their ‘cries for help have been shot down in flames’.
The community council has now joined residents calling for the greenfield housing plans to be rejected, saying there are a lot of unanswered questions and unknowns about the proposed development.
Permission was granted, over 20 years ago, for more than 200 houses on the same land, but these were never built.
The owner of nearby Kitbridge Farm, which originally owned the land sold to developers, spoke of concerns about the potential impact on the sewage system. The Hazel Close resident said school-run traffic is already dangerous and residents ‘faced abuse’ for asking drivers not to park across their driveways.
The community council said a lack of information about pedestrian safety was one reason it would object to the application. The council also said it would have a ‘negative impact on existing public rights of way’, as well as habitats, highways and traffic flow.
Councillors felt there could be an over development of the site and an increased risk of flooding. They said there was little evidence of affordable housing plans. Councillors urged residents to comment on the application, 23/01410/FUL until 6th October, on the Isle of Wight Council’s website.

Cars cannot drive fast through that estate because of the speed bumps and, from memory, there has never been an accident through there… It was obvious more houses were going to be built around there, perhaps the local residents should have reconsidered where they buy if they are so oppose to the new development.
only 20 make them smaller and put 40. then start in the other fields next to all the new ones then you can call it pan 2
I don’t think they know what rat running is
But I do love that logic, “my house built last year is fine, but your built next year is unacceptable”.
Actually mine was built closer to 3 years ago, but this is different. There might be bats nesting in the grass, will someone please think about the bats.
Ghastly – people in homes, denying other people homes. Makes me sick. Oh, and lots of people who buy them are already Islanders, just not of the pitchfork variety who are stuck in the past.
‘Permission was granted over 20 years ago’ – surely this has expired? Or, like another Island developer have they ‘played the system’ and made minor changes for 20 years so they can develop at a time that is more profitable?
As I recall, many many years ago it was rumoured that the estate would finish up on Forest road, welcome to Ryde’s world!
We don’t want any more houses built ,more houses more people!!!!!!
And I don’t even live there !!!!!
So I am not a nimby !
Infrastructure Infrastructure Infrastructure!!!!!!!
Well, it’s true, actually. You can’t keep building more and more houses without doctors, dentists and everything else to support them.
Every day it seems like there’s applications to build new houses all across the island.
When do we get to the stage when enough is enough?
We don’t,these councillor demonics seek the Milton-Keynes model for the island.
There are too many people in the UK and on the island.
There should be selective breeding to stop the giant increase in the population each year. Do this around the world too.
Sterilisation should be compulsory among certain families, we all know the type.
Less people equals less housing needed.
No – not more houses, more people. Lots of these will be bought by existing Islanders and if they’re not, that’s good for diversity if the narrow minded comments on here are anything to go by.
Make your minds up. You want “affordable housing” but then you don’t want it here or there. Numbskulls.
We tried to stop the estate many years ago. But once council make up there minds you don’t stand a chance. I live on the corner of Westmill Road of Mount Battern Drive. Traffic speeding round the estate ,it is a rat run. I would like it to be 20 miles zone for the safety of the children.
Well said, Hamad.
Some people just object to any form of housing and trump up spurious reasons for refusal. I suspect it’s in their own interest to restrict the number of available houses so that their own property will continually increase in value – I can’t see any other reason to prevent people who need housing from getting it.
