A Lithuanian man who tried to rob an NHS worker in the car park of St Mary’s Hospital has avoided a prison sentence.
Nerijus Suminskas, 47, of no fixed abode, appeared before a judge for sentencing – with the assistance of a translator – at the Isle of Wight Crown Court on Friday (24th February).
As previously reported by Island Echo, on Tuesday 7th December last year a 62-year-old woman was approached by the 47-year-old in the North Car Park of St Mary’s Hospital as she left the building.
Suminskas grabbed hold of the woman in a seemingly random attack and a struggle ensued before Suminskas put his hand in her bag. However, he did not manage to steal anything.
The victim called out for help and 2 members of the public came to her aid, 1 of which detained Suminskas at the scene until Police arrived and arrested him.
47-year-old Suminskas was charged with attempted robbery, which he admitted when he appeared at Isle of Wight Crown Court on 16th January.
At Friday’s sentencing hearing, Suminskas was sentenced to 12 months in prison, suspended for 2 years. Recorder Malcolm Gibney also ordered to carry out 20 rehabilitation activity days and 100 hours of unpaid work.

Of no fixed abode, perhaps he should be sent back home! Save the uk tax payer money to on policing him and interpreters.
Why such a lenient outcome, he should be kicked back to Lithuania. Can’t speak English, no fixed abode, come on, throw him out. Low life for sure.
Absolutely bloody disgusting. No fixed abode and they think he will pay a fine and turn up to do unpaid work? He should be put on the first available flight back to Lithuania. Malcolm Gibney should be sacked.
so what about sending him packing all the way home
Disgusting! What are these Judges doing trying not to overpopulate our prisons ? This should have been a custodial sentence.
It is very sad to see all of these comments by people who know nothing of the background to this man. What his childhood and family circumstances were; what his present situation is, except that he appears to have no permanent address. He shouldn’t have committed a crime, but that is no reason to assume that he should be treated as a hardened criminal. The judge would have more information than is reported. Such comments show that Britain’s historical reputation for fairness, for respect and treating everyone with humanity is in decline. The headline suggests that he has got away with his attempted robbery; he hasn’t: the judge applied what he though was an appropriate response. Putting him in prison would involve more public expense.
Oh stop your hand wringing, you’ll make yourself sore.
He has attacked a 62-yr old woman and you’re worrying about his childhood?
Still happy if that was your mum/gran/wife?
You need to give your head a wobble: why should our society have people like that roaming free?
Of course he’s got a home. It’s in Lithuania. Why should British tax payers pay to keep a foreign criminal here. Deport him and ban him from ever coming back.
Bring back the death penalty and legalise euthanasia.
Absolute nonsense. Just send him back home.
Can’t help some people can you! Come here and we show kindness and he gues and dies that! Yes send him back where he belongs:(
Absolute scum robbing anyone is bad but a pensioner vile scum send him back home but no he’s back on the streets looking for other pensioners to rob grrrrr
Be cheaper to deport him than to give him benefits, why when he attacked someone is he just given a slap on the wrist ?????
Maybe we should set up a go fund me page to send him back where he came from !?!?.
Malcolm gibney should be jailed for the pathetic sentence he handed out
Why do we not deport these scumbags? Honestly, this country is a joke
He should have been sent back to the Ukraine, not robbing the people who invited him to safety, disgusting.
This country must be the laughing stock of the world ,what a joke our judicial system is come to Britain commit crimes and you won’t get punished
