The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service are tackling a blaze that has broken out in Haylands near Ryde this afternoon (Thursday).
5 fire appliances – 2 from Ryde, 2 from Newport and 1 other from Sandown – are on scene at Southfield Gardens tackling the blaze that has destroyed a fence, hedge and is spreading towards a garden shed and property.
Gas cylinders can be heard exploding with large plumes of smoke billowing into the sky which can be seen for miles around.
Fire crews are using breathing apparatus, hose reels and main jets to douse the flames as the fire intensifies.
Crews were initially called to the incident at around 15:15 – at the same time that fire crews from Ryde were attending a road traffic collision at Binstead.
UPDATE @ 15:40 – The fire has now spread to a nearby property and smoke can be issuing from the roof space.
An aerial ladder platform from Ryde and the Incident Command Unit from Newport are now also on scene alongside a senior fire officer.
UPDATE @ 16:04 – Firefighters are now getting a hold of the situation but at least 1 property has been severely damaged by the blaze, which has spread across multiple gardens.
Bettesworth Road has been closed to all traffic and pedestrians are being kept away from the immediate area.
It is currently unclear what caused the fire to break out, but it is understood to have started in the garden or hedge row of a residential address.
UPDATE @ 17:40 – The fire has been brought under control but firefighters remain on scene ramping down the effected areas. Sadly, the roof of one house has been destroyed with substantial damage to the rest of the house.
Crews from Shanklin and Bembridge are now relieving the first teams on scene, who have spent the past 2 hours battling the flames. 2 water carriers from Ventnor and Freshwater are also now on scene to assist with the supply of water to the appliances.
Volunteers from the British Red Cross Fire and Emergency Support Unit have arrived at Southfield Gardens to provide assistance to those displaced.
The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service are expected to remain on scene for several hours.
Thankfully, no one has been injured in the incident – Read more at https://www.islandecho.co.uk/no-one-injured-in-haylands-blaze-but-house-destroyed-by-fire/.

omg i can see the house burning down from my garden i hope no one is in there
How did this start
Hedge fire went to sheds with canisters in it and then went to the house 🙁
A
big thank you to the off duty patamedic and his wife for your help
Whats the watch Commander (white hat) doing in B.A surely he’s got other FF’s he can ask to don a breathing apparatus set, what station is this WC from any idea’s?
Perhaps he’s one of the decent ones who doesn’t just point the finger and issue the orders… but also gets his hands dirty and is a team player..
One of my friends from school lives right near there, she has a rabbit in her garden, and dogs inside.
Someone told me she is ok.. but not the animals
Oh no that’s devastating
Oh no, poor creatures.
What would have started a fire in a hedge? Surely not some passerby being stupid enough to throw a lit cigarette in there? If not, surely no one would be so stupid and nasty as to set fire to someone’s hedge?
Could the dogs have been left barking day after day and the social isolation made someone flip as happened in Freshwater, when the set fire to the poor dogs house?
There is more to this than meet the eye I think.
