A bed and breakfast in Lake that simply isn’t making enough money and has failed to sell on the open market could now be turned into a family home.
The 7-bed Haytor Lodge on the Cliff Path could close if the Isle of Wight Council grants planning permission.
Documents submitted to the authority say the business is not generating a sustainable income for its owners, Mr and Mrs Hammant, to continue running it as they look to retire.
It has been on the market for over a year but has had no interest from any of the viewings which have taken place.
Estate agent, Hose Rhodes Dickson, said the level of interest in the property has dropped recently and the hotel and guest house market on the Island is quiet.
Documents from planning agent, Andrew White Planning Consultancy, said the accommodation could be described as basic and all the rooms would require radical upgrading to meet modern standards.
The B&B has relied, the planning agents say, on a core group of regular guests who have returned year after year.
The building could be a 3 or 4-bed house.
You can view the plans, 23/00425/FUL, on the council’s website. Comments can be viewed until 25th April.

Looks like a council house
B&B in Lake? Shocked they’re not fully booked 365 days a year!
If it was on the high street it would be fully booked I’m sure.
Lake high street has a major road running through it. It’s a horrible place to be, it’d have less visitors there
Really??? Reminds me of a mini Sandbanks.
Nothing wrong with Lake, we live in a really nice spot, close to the train station, minutes from the cliff path and a short walk to the bus stops & Tesco if you need anything in a hurry
Lake is a ghost town since they closed the Stag. Best pub on the island that was.
You won’t need planning permission if you talk nicely to Claire mosdel she can easily get around planning permission. You could even have a paddock in the back garden
Like someone else has already said, Lake is one of the worst places to live on the island. That main road never goes quiet and sirens are heard often throughout the night.
The place has bathrooms off each bedroom and at reasonable price in one of Lake’s better locations, although these days any B & B owner would be concerned about the Government housing their new guests in their Hotel
Any smart person would be more than happy with that option as it would generate about £500,000 a year in revenue. Do it for a couple of years and you have a free property.
Like this is even news
In other exciting news, I just saw a cat in the garden. A black one. It tried to do its business but scared it off. Whatever next!
Sorry to hear they have not found a buyer yet. I used this B&B on two occasions and was delighted with the (different) rooms I was given; can’t imagine what “radical upgrading” they would need.
