Strike action by members of the British Medical Association (BMA) will affect services across the Isle of Wight later this week.
Resident doctors (formerly known as junior doctors) who are members of the BMA are due to take part in strike action from 07:00 on Friday 26th July to 07:00 on Wednesday 30th July, in an ongoing dispute between unions and the Government over pay.
BMA members employed as resident doctors in the Isle of Wight NHS Trust are expected to participate in the planned strike action.
Partners across the health and care system continue to work together and are urging local residents to use health services appropriately to ensure they receive the right care for their needs in as timely a way as possible. Patient safety remains the absolute priority.
Dr Lara Alloway, Chief Medical Officer for NHS Hampshire and Isle of Wight Integrated Care Board said:
“We are working closely with our partners across the county to plan, prepare and mitigate the potential impact on patients, communities and staff to ensure that services continue to run as smoothly as possible.
“Patient care remains our top priority, and we are working hard to ensure that we continue to deliver the best level of care possible. If you have an appointment during the industrial action you should continue to attend as planned unless you are contacted to reschedule.
“No one should put off seeking care or treatment during the industrial action and details of all available services including Pharmacy First and urgent treatment centres are on the NHS Hampshire and Isle of Wight website. While we are urging local people to choose the right service for their needs, you should always call 999 or attend our emergency departments if it is an emergency situation.”
Patients will continue to be prioritised according to clinical need, and any patients who have an appointment during the industrial action should continue to attend as planned unless they are contacted to reschedule.
Please help keep Emergency Departments free for those who need them most. If you have an urgent medical problem and you are not sure what to do, visit 111 online at 111.nhs.uk but always call 999 in an emergency.

There are no Junior Doctors in the NHS, so it must be other Doctors going on strike! Journalism should really up its game on verifying before it prints.
The headline reads ” Junior Doctors “, Most of the public would know these doctors as Junior Doctors, as was their title for a long period, even during the previous strikes.
Island Echo clearly states ” Resident Doctors ( formerly known as Junior Doctors ).
To me this is the correct manner for this news headline.
Oh! dear.lol
They were treated well with a decent pay rise, now the
greedy selfish B’stards want more.
it use to be a calling working for the NHS,
nowdays they are only in it for the money and
lucrative pensions
SACK THEM AND BRING IN MORE OVERSEAS
,DOCTOR WHO ARE ACTUALLY CARE FOR PATIENTS
That is the problem when you keep giving,
people get greedy.
Get all the “SHIRKING” from home NHS staff
back into the workplace, they are bleeding the
NHS dry!
Since the pandemic they have never had it so good!!
Pure greed, get back to work, you earn more than most people already.
They also train more, (5-10 years depending on speciality) and are higher qualified than most people already,…
So why shouldn’t they be paid more than most people.(which probably isn’t true anyway)
“In their first year (FY1), junior doctors in England can expect a starting salary of £36,616, according to the BMA. By the second year (FY2), their salary increases to £42,008, according to the BMA.”
The UK average in 2024 was >£38k
so in their first year,.. they actally earn less than average…
What’s better…
to pay Doctors (who’s work is solely for the benifit of their patients, and who work to save lives) a reasonable, if above average, wage..
or to pay millions, to executives of water and ferry companies, who only work to make more money for themselves, at the expense of the public) ?
the BMA are deluded, woke, left wing clowns – there is no support for this strike from society, as they got whopping pay rises not that long ago.
You know what the pay was when you joined so what the f……Get to work and help people you idiots. I grew up in a council house. I joined the army at 16 because of my poor background and served 2 tours in Northern Ireland by the age of 21 as an infantryman. Whereas you’ve come from wealthy backgrounds never wanting for nothing. So pull your finger out and get to work.
“Patient care remains our top priority” … HYPOCRITS, all their interested in is their own pockets. You knew the wages and conditions when you decided on medicine as a carree, if you dont like it leave and join the rest of us who dont have guaranteed jobs and pensions.
Solidarity with doctors.
We all need doctors. We should all stand with doctors.
How about for the duration of the strike we choose an evening and time and all go out onto our doorsteps and boo for a minute!! The greedy b!@#!^#>s are playing with patients lives and are sticking two fingers up at us.
Such greedy entitled hypocrites. It used to be a profession and a vocation to be admired. Now it’s just a highly paid business.
Even the qualifications to get accepted at medical school have dropped to such a mediocre level and their knowledge is often deplorable
Shame on you,
The “doctors” had a payrise just recently and want another one ?
Hmm , right so striking is the answer is it , I think not.
How about the BMA actually becoming less militant and woke.
Patients will be put at risk yet again , and other staff will be left picking up the pieces.
Quite apart from the cost of it all to the NHS , who pay their wages.
Get back to work , the rest of us n other professions outside the health service haven’t had a payrise in years.
Stop moaning and do your jobs , lives will be at risk
Junior (resident) doctors earn just over £36k basic in their first qualifying year. At the same time, they’ve accrued between £70-100k of debt from uni and training, which is also subject to ongoing interest the longer it takes to pay off. To attempt to rise out of that, they study more towards a specialism, hoping one day to earn up to £71k and thus pay off the debt manageably.
That initial pay equates to roughly £18 an hour to potentially save your life; £6 of which pays back the debt…making their pay LESS THAN THE MINIMUM WAGE.
They can of course work more than the 40 hours in an attempt to earn more, but how happy should we be knowing that the bloke holding the knife that could save our lives has been working for over 15 hours that day?
And they pay rise they were ‘given’? They haven’t actually received it yet…
stop crying sunshine – we aint buying the wailing
other people are managing on minimum wage and deciding whether to eat or heat the home
Don’t worry we”re already “put off seeking care from the nhs”
Some consultants have no time for treating anyone as if they are a human being, and are now becoming negligent.
They and PALS close ranks if you dare to complain.
Im sure most of the staff are completely exhausted, they try hard to keep the institution that was given to us, hats off to most of them. Those that are suffering depression and anxiety themselves should not be taking it out on patients and rudely treating them as an inconvenience
A and E is in total chaos. How is anyone supposed to heal in that hectic and public area.Very ill people are lying on beds in corridors, crying out, with absolutely no privacy.
I personally will never go to St Marys again.
Time to learn to look after yourselves and each other folks.
Supported their first claim when they got a pay rise but not this time. They are pushing their luck with the public who are suffering their own financial problems & worry about getting medical treatment
