Maureen Sullivan previews Isle of Wight theatrical productions for September.
The Apollo Players will be staging ‘The Girl on a Train’ from 6th to 14th September (not Sunday or Monday) at their lovely theatre on Pyle Street, Newport. Rachel Watson longs for a different life. Her only escape is the perfect couple she watches through the train window every day, happy and in love. Or so it appears.
When Rachel learns that the woman she has been secretly watching has suddenly disappeared, she finds herself as a witness and even a suspect in a thrilling mystery in which she will face bigger revelations than she could ever have anticipated. Based on the best-selling novel by Paula Hawkins and the Dreamworks film, and adapted by Rachel Wagstaff & Duncan Abel, the play contains infrequent strong language. Tickets are available from The Girl on the Train at Apollo Theatre, Newport event tickets from TicketSource
A modern take on ‘The Canterbury Tales’ comes to Trinity Theatre from 12th to 15th September: rewritten by award winning director, Gwen Stevens, CAODS’ production features 8 light-hearted and funny tales with some raunchy and rude adult humour. This is a show not to be missed!
Gwen says:
“I’ve wanted to bring Canterbury Tales to the stage for some years now and am delighted to be able to do so …. These stories range from moral to vulgar based on who tells them …. funny, rude and insightful they are!”
Dinah Bowman, President of CAODS says:
“Gwen, the cast, costumes and crew have done a terrific job bringing Chaucer to life.Gwen has rewritten the tales with lots of narration and with special attention to a non-sighted audience. There is lots of physical comedy, almost panto-like humour, in the show. Come along. I promise you a fun evening!” Book online at: www.caods.org.uk
GASP are back with another Gilbert and Sullivan musical extravaganza: this year ‘The Mikado’, comes to Bembridge Village Hall from 25th to 29th September. Director John Abraham has taken as his inspiration the black and white 1987 version starring Eric Idle – the production retains however all the humour and satire of the 1865 original, so come with us to the mythical town of Titipu where Ko-Ko the tailor has been made Lord High Executioner….and now he has to find someone to execute. You can bet the plot will get sillier and sillier – and funnier – as it goes on.
But who cares whether it all makes sense as long as everyone lives happily ever after (well, almost….), and we can enjoy the fantastic music along the way, including ‘A Wand’ring Minstrel I’, ‘Three Little Maids from School’ and of course ‘The List Song’.
So join them for laughter, music and great entertainment – tickets available from GASP event tickets from TicketSource.
