A multi-use hub providing meals, community events and job training could be installed within the grounds of a Sandown school, under new planning proposals submitted to the Isle of Wight Council.
The Bay CE School in Sandown has applied for permission to site a ‘huddle catering unit’ within a shipping container at its secondary campus.
The initiative aims to improve access to food, create revenue, support student learning and strengthen community engagement.
According to planning documents submitted by the school, the hub would provide daily hot meals and snacks for pupils, as well as on-site catering for events such as parents’ evenings, staff meetings and school performances as well as work experience opportunities.
Outside of school hours, the unit could be used to cater for community groups, sports clubs and charities. Plans also reference potential partnerships with farms, suppliers and social enterprises, alongside the possibility of operating a weekend or evening cafe.
The school’s agent, ERMC, has said:
“The proposed works intend to establish a catering unit that serves students and staff during school hours, while providing a community accessible venue and food services outside of school hours.
“With a balanced mix of daily student revenue and regular community bookings, the unit is expected to become self-sustaining within 12-24 months and generate surplus funds that can support broader school initiatives.”
A decision on the proposal is expected in April.
