Isle of Wight golf professional Brandon Robinson Thompson set a course record of 61 in the DP World Tour in Bahrain today (Thursday).
The 32-year-old – who began his career at Freshwater Golf Club – is now leading the international field after the first day.
Brandon had hit 8 birdies and 3 eagles to put himself on 56 going into the final hole.
Had he recorded a birdie on the 18th, Brandon would have equalled the DP World Tour record of 59 set by Oliver Fisher in the 2018 European Masters. Sadly, he ‘only’ made a bogey on the final hole.
After his performance, Brandon said:
“I think it’s my lowest round as a professional, let alone on the DP World Tour.
“It has to be up there with a Sunday to close out a HotelPlanner Tour event last year. I know it’s the first round but 61, that has to be first or second, surely.”
When asked at what point he became aware he might equal the DP World Tour course record with a 59, Brandon commented:
“After about nine holes!
“And then I hit it to about four feet on ten, and I was like, ‘oh’… Unfortunately I missed that one.
“It was just an accumulation of a lot of good decision making and execution.
“I didn’t really picture it this morning when it was raining and there were forecasts of super-strong winds. Very happy to get off to the start I did. Little bit of a sour taste in my mouth, but I holed my fair share.”
