Richard Lodge and Jason Evans of Isle of Wight firm Rightwire Ltd are taking on the Pompeii or Bust Challenge, driving a car worth scrap value from the Isle of Wight to Italy in aid of Mountbatten.
The car of choice is a 1991 Austin Montego estate, which has not been on the road since 2008. Worryingly, the British-built car had a reputation for unreliability back in the day to the effect that breakdown patrols named the hard shoulder ‘Montego Bay’.
The local duo will be driving their Mountbatten-themed, 28-year-old car from the Island to Pompeii on 28th September, camping in different locations as they progress across Europe. No doubt they will be performing a whole host of roadside repairs along the way too!
Richard and Jason are taking on the challenge to raise money for the fantastic staff and patients at Mountbatten Hospice – a cause very close to the hearts of the staff at Right Wire. The company has sponsored the challenge by funding the rally entry costs, car and its repairs to enable an MOT.
The rally starts in Cornwall, where the entrants will meet before heading to Plymouth to catch the overnight ferry. After the 10-hour long ferry crossing, the vehicles will roll off in Roscoff. This is where Richard and Jason will find out their destination for that day along with the fun challenges to complete en-route.
Challenges equal points and clues as to where competitors will be staying that night. Points are awarded for an array of challenges including car theming and fancy dress.
In order to win the rally, it is not about getting to Pompeii first, it’s about the points you pick up along the way. The winner has an additional donation made to their cause.
The team hope to raise at least £1,000 for charity, with £400 already in the kitty. You can donate too by visiting https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/mountbattenbangerrally.
