Representatives from several of the Isle of Wight’s leading animal charities have come together at the RSPCA Isle of Wight headquarters this week to discuss shared challenges and explore the benefits of closer collaboration.
Charities present at the meeting included RSPCA Isle of Wight, Friends of the Animals, Owl and Monkey Haven, Isle of Wight Donkey Sanctuary, Badger Trust Isle of Wight, Wight Squirrel Project, and Cats Protection.
The discussion centred around key issues affecting animal welfare on the Isle of Wight, with a particular focus on access to veterinary care and joint fundraising opportunities.
Those attending highlighted the value of sharing expertise, pooling resources, and working together to ensure that more animals across the Isle of Wight receive the support they need. It was agreed that increased collaboration could help improve efficiency, emergency response, community engagement, and overall fundraising success.
A follow-up meeting has been scheduled for January, with organisers expressing hope that additional Island-based animal charities will join the growing initiative.
Steve Backhouse, RSPCA Isle of Wight Branch Director, has said:
“Bringing our charities together allows us to share knowledge, avoid duplication of effort, support each other and ultimately provide better care for the animals that need us.”
Helen Sinclair MBE, Founder, Friends of the Animals, added:
“We’re all here with the same objective and this is a great move for the future. We are excited about the opportunity’s collaboration will bring, particularly in improving the speed that we can respond and help animals in need.”

The crucial thing you could do to help families with pets is to encourage the vet surgeries to lower their prices. Many of the ones bought up by big companies not the independents.
Vets are like dentists – cash cows.
Why on earth would the big companies take any notice they have all the fascilities which most independents don’t have so they cannot
lose.
