Monkey Haven, the Isle of Wight’s award-winning primate rescue centre, has launched an urgent appeal to raise £25,000 to rebuild a much-loved enclosure that is now dangerously deteriorated.
The enclosure, originally built in 2006 to house the first rescued monkeys brought in by founder Don Walser, was due to be replaced in 2026. However, its condition has worsened more quickly than expected and action must now be taken this winter to protect the animals who live there.
The space is home to the Haven’s Siamang and Mueller’s gibbons, and was also where the late Xhabu lived before his passing earlier this year.
Monkey Haven is re-launching its ‘Raise the Roof’ campaign with the aim of completing the rebuild during its seasonal closure. The new enclosure will be built from sustainable materials and designed to offer more space, comfort and enrichment for the gibbons.
“We desperately need the community’s support to raise £25,000 by February 2026 so that we can keep these incredible animals safe and happy. Every donation, raffle prize and act of support really will make a difference,” a spokesperson said.
To support the campaign, Monkey Haven will also be hosting a Christmas Market on Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th November 2025 (10:00–15:30) with local stalls, festive food, raffles and fun for the whole family. Entry will be by a minimum £5 donation per person, with all proceeds going directly to the appeal.

There are several ways Islanders can help. Donations can be made online via the official GoFundMe page at https://gofund.me/50035852e. Businesses and individuals are encouraged to donate raffle prizes, which will play an important role in fundraising efforts. Local traders can also book stalls at the upcoming Christmas Market. Finally, Monkey Haven is urging supporters to spread the word and share details of the campaign as widely as possible.
