An injured paraglider has been airlifted from downland in the West Wight directly to St Mary’s Hospital this afternoon (Tuesday).
The Isle of Wight Ambulance Service was alerted to the casualty’s plight on Compton Down, between Military Road and Middle Road, at around 14:30.
Due to the remote location of the incident, the assistance of HM Coastguard was requested with Coastguard Rescue Officers from The Needles and Ventnor tasked to the scene.
With the light fading and injuries prohibitive to transfer via vehicle, the decision was taken to call in the support of Coastguard Rescue 175 from Lee-on-Solent. The helicopter was diverted from the Dorset area, arriving above the downs at just gone 16:00.
The injured male was transferred into the helicopter and has since been flown directly to St Mary’s Hospital in Newport, landing on the helipad at 16:25.
Coastguard Rescue 175 has now stood down from the incident and is returning to base following a quick transfer.

This vile council have taken away the steps to Whale Chine. Although they only went so far down, they made an access for anglers and stout footed hikers. NOW they have taken the lot away.
There was no legal need to do so, as the path had huge barrier and signs saying it was closed, so they were legally ‘covered’
Can’t help wondering if their reason after all this time, is NOT coincidental in them granting planning permission near there for holiday homes, and will then USE the steps and beach access as a ‘sweetner’ to buy the locals, by saying the developer will have to pay to reinstate the beach access.
This lot are sly, devious and untrustworthy, so don’t put anything past them
Vote them OUT
Absolutely right, dear heart. Everything they are doing right now is morally bankrupt, ecologically unsound, and downright evil. Too strong a word, Mr Toogood? How about describing people who rob the playing fields of local children to build houses for imported problems as evil? Done, and we have been!
What’s that got to do with the accident, Steps being taken away.
Paragliding during ‘Lock Down’ Fine him
Fine you for being daft.
Idiotic statement. I’m a pilot and find your remark offensive .
You may find it offensive Scud but paragliding is not essential travel, just another case of the rules being ignored and putting the people who had to rescue him at risk.
He was not breaking the rules .
That IS pretty pathetic. Most accidents happen in the home.
