The Hurricanes came close to hitting a 3-figure score in their match against Alresford at Ryde School on Saturday (15th October).
The hosts got off to a blistering start with Flux scoring the 1st of 6 tries in the 1st half. These were shortly followed by scores for Luke Wedderkop, Luke Chandler and Michael Barrett, with Flux having a hand in each of them.
The game was brought to a short pause with Harry Miselbach being caught underneath a collapsed maul and sustaining a serious knee injury, which hopefully isn’t as serious as 1st feared.
The 1st-half scoring was completed with a try for Tom Marriott, who scooped up a loose pass to sprint in unopposed. This was then followed up by Captain and Wightfibre Man of the Match Zak Chiverton scoring the 1st try of his hat-trick, scoring off a well-worked line-out move.
Half time: Sandown & Shanklin RFC 40-0 Alresford RFC
The 2nd half started as quickly as the 1st with Chiverton securing his 2nd try. Strong carrying from Sam Rees and Sam Dawson helped keep the Alresford defence honest and allow gaps to open for fly-half Anthony Burr to exploit. Chandler and Barrett each scored their 2nd tries of the game thanks to excellent creative play from centre Sam Tyson.
The visitors did manage a score of their own, after consecutive errors and penalties allowed them an attacking line out on the Sandown 5-metre line, the resulting maul being driven over the try line.
The relentless Hurricanes did not falter though and were reinvigorated with the introduction of Luke Orton making his 1st XV debut, his hard carrying providing fresh impetus for the hosts. Despite Hugo Jolliffe falling short of an open try line due to cramp, the ‘home’ side managed to score a further 4 tries. The 1st came for Carew, who barged over from close range, and the 2nd for fullback Harvey Kirkby, whose total points tall for the afternoon was 29 points. The final 2 tries were scored by Tyson, following some brilliant work from Kai Matsumoto-Prouten for 1 and Luke Wedderkop for the other.

Final thoughts from Director of Rugby, Damien Marriott:
“Big thank you to Ryde School for hosting the fixture. This kind of score line has been coming for a few weeks and the boys have been on fine form recently. Unfortunately for Alresford they happened to be on the receiving end but give them credit they showed lots of character and fight for their club. We now have to take this performance into the next few weeks with some massive fixtures coming up. The boys will need to keep improving.”
Next weekend the 1st XV travel to Chichester RFC to play their 2nd XV. Meanwhile, the Hurricanes 2nd XV are also on the road, away to Southsea Nomads RFC
