Ryde Saints had goalkeeper Keiron Williams to thank for 3 penalty saves as they won the inaugural Ryde Saints Cup at Smallbrook on Wednesday evening.
4 teams took part in the tournament: Ryde Saints, East Cowes Victoria Reserves, Newport Reserves and Cowes Sports Reserves. The games were played over one half of 40 minutes, with penalties deciding the winner in the event of a draw.
The first semi-final saw Ryde Saints hold East Cowes Vics Reserves to a goalless draw before winning the penalty shootout 4-2.
A Charlie Haward goal was sufficient to separate Cowes Sports Reserves and Newport Reserves in the 2nd semi-final, with the Yachtsmen running out 1-0 winners.
A strike by Adam Voller saw Vics Reserves defeat Newport Reserves in the 3rd-place final by a single goal.
The final was a closely contested affair with chances for both sides, which again ended goalless. Saints keeper Keiron Williams was the difference between the 2 sides, pulling off 2 vital stops to win the game for the Ryde team 4-2 on penalties.
The successful Ryde Saints penalty takers were: Jack Maloney, Tom Brunton, Alfie Donovan and Billy McCormack.
