Firefighters were called out to help rescue a herring gull tangled in fishing line on a roof in Cowes late this morning (Tuesday).
The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service mobilised a retained appliance from Cowes to the scene at 11:35.
It was discovered that the bird was not only tangled in fishing line but snagged on cables on the pitched roof too.
The single crew used a ladder to reach the gull and successfully rescued it using a net.
An RSPCA inspector was called to the scene and took the bird into their care.
Hampshire Fire Control have issued a reminder to Islanders that if you see an animal that needs rescuing, to contact the RSPCA on 0300 1234999 or go to their website http://rspca.org.uk. If the RSPCA deem a fire service attendance appropriate, they will contact the emergency services.

Excellent! Must be a no news day!
Air rifle could have dealt with that…!
I think it is nice that money is spent on creatures who, unlike most people, can’t help themselves and ask for nothing.
If they could, they would ask for chips. I do….
Well done everyone who helped with the rescue.
