Historic England in the South East is launching a photography competition on the theme of ‘Heritage At Risk’ to highlight the region’s stunning historic places and draw attention to some of the challenges they face.
The competition, open to everyone, is an opportunity for budding photographers young and old to dust off their cameras and start capturing historic sites which are on Historic England’s Heritage at Risk Register – or other historic places that look a little unloved under the theme of Heritage at Risk.
Is there a beautiful historic building on your high street lying empty? Can you capture ivy taking over a tumbling ruin? Is there a leaky drain on your local church? Or is your local historic park looking a bit neglected?
Clare Charlesworth, Historic England’s Heritage at Risk Principal Adviser in the South East said:
We are hoping for some imaginative and exciting images on heritage at risk. Heritage is all around us with 99.3% of people in England living within a mile of a listed place so you are never far away from something special. You can use our Heritage at Risk register for inspiration but we are also really excited to see examples of local heritage that might not be listed that you think is at risk – surprise us!
“Please remember to stay safe when taking photos and not to trespass on private land there are plenty of historic places in public spaces to look for inspiration.”
In the South East there are 506 heritage assets on the At Risk Register these include 86 Grade I and II* buildings, 217 scheduled monuments, 104 places of worship, 24 registered parks and gardens, one battlefield, four protected wrecks and 70 conservation areas all at risk of neglect, decay or inappropriate change.
The competition is now open with entries accepted until midnight the 11th September. Photos should be submitted via Twitter to @HE_SouthEast or emailed to [email protected]. 1 photo entry per person only and the image must have been taken in the South East, including the Isle of Wight.
