The vice chair of the Isle of Wight Council Vanessa Churchman has 4 party political candidates and an Independent competing for her seat ahead of the local elections.
Peter Douglas Cameron Banks (The Green Party), Simon Peter Haytack (Labour Party), Les Kirkby (Reform UK), Malcolm Ross (Liberal Democrat) and Sandy Stephens (Independent) are challenging the Conservative incumbent.
The Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS) contacted candidates for 100-word pitches and photos, either directly or through parties or groups, before the May 7 vote.
Here’s what they had to say, in no particular order…
Peter Douglas Cameron Banks
As an Isle of Wight born and bred citizen, concern for all aspects of the Island is an instinctive priority for me. As a resident of Haylands I can use my knowledge of planning and finance to ensure that this ward is well served and supported.
I sit on two national NGO forums, one directly with the Government Department for Energy Security and Net Zero and the other with the Office for Nuclear Regulation. I am a professional musician and a volunteer at the Isle of Wight Steam Railway.
Vanessa Claire Churchman (incumbent ward councillor)
I ran Bembridge Art Gallery and retired in 2010. I became a councillor in 2005 and have represented Haylands and Swanmore since then, except for 2013-2017 but was re-elected in 2017 and am the current.
I have been a governor at Haylands Primary since 2007 and in 2013 when the new school was built in Bettesworth Road I was very involved in the building process, including making sure the drainage was adequate and fit for purpose.
I was responsible for finally getting Smallbrook roundabout rebuilt. I am currently vice chair of the Isle of Wight Council.
Simon Peter Haytack
Simon Haytack is local small business owner and experienced hospitality manager, passionate about supporting his community and helping local businesses thrive.
Les Kirkby
I have lived in this ward for the last 46 years and until last year was Ryde town councillor for Haylands and Swanmore. I learned a lot in this role, but the real difference is made if you are an Isle of Wight councillor.
I am fed up with ever increasing council tax, which is only matched by decreasing services. Our money is mismanaged and those in charge show no accountability.
If I am successful in this election I am only a short walk away or on the end of the phone and will welcome questions or lend an ear any time.

Sandy Stephens
Island-born and educated in Ryde, I have worked in the financial sector and as a local retail business owner.
Standing as the Independent candidate for Haylands and Swanmore, I live in the heart of our community and have been involved in a range of local initiatives.
As a former Ryde Town Councillor, I have shown commitment, professionalism, and respect for confidentiality.
I believe an independent, non-partisan voice matters, focused on our people and our place, I am committed in working collaboratively across political groups.
I am dedicated to creating opportunities for young people and ensuring compassionate care for older residents.
