Isle of Wight Sailor, Haydn Sewell, notched up another sailing success last weekend winning the Davey Trophy as the top junior boy in the main fleet at the 2013 Volvo Gill Optimist Inland Championships.
The two day event was held at Grafham Water and attracted a fleet of over 200 young sailors from around the UK aged 9 – 15. Over the five race series Haydn only had one result outside of the top ten with a 9th, 8th, 6th and 5th giving him a total points tally of 28. This meant that overall the 10 year old Royal Victoria Yacht Club sailor finished the Championships in 7th place making him the highest ranked Junior (under 13) sailor.
Commenting on his achievement Haydn said “It was a great weekends sailing, I love the big fleets where we there are so many other boats to race against. Going into the last race I knew I had a chance to get into the top 10 if I got a good another good result. Finishing in 7th placing was awesome, I was so excited when I realised how well I had done and was very happy to win the trophy as the top junior.”
Haydn’s sailing adventures continue next week when he flies out to Turkey as part of the 8 person British Optimist Development Team that is competing in the Bodrum International Regatta.
