Officers investigating last week’s serious collision on Briddlesford Road have identified the man who they believe was driving one of the vehicles.
Police are appealing directly to this man – who has not been named at this time but is thought to be local – to do the right thing and come forward.
The collision, which involved a BMW and a Vauxhall Astra, happened on Briddlesford Road on the outskirts of Newport and Wootton at 17:45 on Thursday 27th June.
The driver of the Astra, a 28-year-old woman from Ryde named by the family as Becky Wall, sustained serious and life-threatening injuries. She was taken to Southampton General Hospital for treatment, where she remains in a critical condition. Her family are by her side at the hospital.
The driver of the BMW left the scene before police arrived.
The passenger, who also fled from the scene and had been sought by Police, is said to now be in custody on an unrelated matter. Officers will be looking to speak to him about the collision.
Superintendent Sarah Jackson has said:
“Our investigation is progressing and we have identified the person we believe was driving the BMW at the time of the collision. We are actively seeking this man and are continuing to gather information about the collision.
“I’d like to appeal directly to this man to come forward. You know who you are. Do the right thing and hand yourself in.
“I would like to thank the community for their continued support and those who have come forward with information to assist our inquiry.”
Anyone with information should contact Hampshire Constabulary on 101 quoting Operation Mirage.
Almost £9,500 has been raised for the family of Becky Wall through a Facebook Fundraiser. NAME AND PHOTO….. THEN LET THE JOE PUBLIC GET HOLD OFF THE RATS HAPPY HUNTING
Disagree. The police are becoming lazier and lazier, and should be out themselves looking for the individual, not the public. That’s not yours or my job.
Asking the public for help is not being lazy it’s using all means possible at your disposal while continuing to police the area.
No, they’re just shorter & shorter of resources due to crippling funding cuts.
if you want the police to be able to do more,. you’ll have to pay more tax! (if you pay any that is)
If they know who it is go and arrest him.
So the reports indicate he’s on the run – even if the police think they know WHO he is the lack of an arrest suggests they don’t know WHERE he is. They can’t reveal his name at this time as it would probably jeopardise any future criminal trial as the law stands and they are also tied by the possibility it’s not actually who they think it is… That said, I think the law needs changing in these situations. The police should be allowed to say “We are currently looking for xxxxxxxxxx. IF you know where he/she is please contact us at. yyyyyyyyy. No need to mention the connection to the crime.
Not at address
just give us the name then would make life a lot easier at the moment we are looking for someone but we don’t know who we are looking for. Kind of pointless really.
As they say… you can run but you can’t hide…
Especially with the reg in clear view, unlike the car in front. Assuming that it’s legit of course
Just give us the name!! Someone might know where he is!!
“We have identified the male in the car, but we won’t go out or waste any resources trying to arrest him. We’ll let the public deal with it.” -Hampshire Constabulary
That’s madness…. it’s tantamount to vigilanteism especially with the amount of bad feeling among Joe Public, being authorised by the Police!!…
Can’t they just arrest the guy they think it is on suspicion
Can,t find him
So you want him to
hand himself in, and you know who it is. you cant find him. a photo would have him caught tomorrow.
They should repent, well the driver :
There is a bit of a difference between 6 police searching to the Isle of Wight searching
If they just gave us a photo we could find the horrible man
They won’t hand themselves in.
They’ve not got the ball’s, nor back bone they were born with.
Total cowards. Their families will be so ashamed of these gutless wonders when caught. And caught they will be.
They so stupid they can’t even see how much more trouble they will be in by not doing the right thing.
I suspect that the family and his very local community know exactly who did this and will be keeping to that ridiculous “We Don’t Grass” ideology.. Meanwhile a young mother, innocent of all blame, is fighting for her life whilst her family try to keep things together and those responcable will be living it high. The strangest thing here is that if any member of the drivers group was seriously injured like this they would be shouting for the police to sort it out!
There is no point in having a go at the Police. They have to have Proof or a confession from the driver when he is found, forming a vigilante group is Not going the help the situation just potentially cause more problems.
Ah, the new style of policing. Do a crime, then the Police expect YOU to hand yourself in.
Somehow don’t think that this is going to catch on, but will save the Police the effort of getting out of the car and walking to the ‘known’ criminals abode.
Shame they can’t microchip everyone with an individual number, as they do car number plates, then sit behind a scanner to arrest suspects with full, irrefutable evidence of wrongdoing as they do with motorists.
Perhaps the Isle of Wight could be a test area to try it out?
