The Green Party is defending one of its two Isle of Wight Council seats against Reform UK and the Tories.
James Robert Downard (Reform UK), Mark Ian Reen (Local Conservatives) and Vix Lowthion (The Green Party) are looking to replace outgoing Carisbrooke and Gunville councillor Joe Lever at the May 7 County Hall elections.
The Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS) requested 100-word pitches from candidates and photos, either directly or through parties or groups.
Here’s what they had to say, in no particular order…
James Robert Downard
As a Newport resident I am happy to be standing for Reform UK as a candidate in the local elections this May. I am a Royal Navy veteran with a background built on discipline, duty, and a commitment to serving our country and community.
I want the opportunity to now offer my service to this ward by representing the residents of Fairlee and Whippingham as a robust, determined
councillor.
The traffic management on the Island is dire and residents in this ward are affected more than most. I give my assurance I will work hard to ensure Island Roads are accountable for their actions and scrutinised for decisions they make.
Vix Lowthion
The Isle of Wight needs bold and brave decisions to move forward, alongside protecting our beautiful countryside and coastline. After volunteering as a parish and town councillor on the island for the last ten years, I am ready to serve in the role as county councillor for our community.
Carisbrooke and Gunville is steeped in heritage, but is also vulnerable to flooding and the impact of big housing developments, plus the challenges stemming from inequalities in our society. As a secondary school teacher I am ambitious for everyone on our Island and I promise to work hard. This is my first Isle of Wight Council election.
Mark Ian Reen
Lived on Island 12 years. 35 years senior management in publishing industry including Mirror Group, IPC, Time Warner and Immediate. Ten years councillor in London Borough of Ealing: cabinet member health and social care, finance. dep chair planning. Currently governor Carisbrooke C of E.
