After weeks of warm weather, dry ground and the recent hosepipe ban, Green Party Councillor Claire Critchison is proposing to bar disposable barbeques on Isle of Wight Council land, parks and public areas, including beaches.
This week, the Isle of Wight Council issued an urgent warning to residents and visitors after public litter bins in Ryde, Sandown and Shanklin were destroyed by heat from single-use grills.
In addition to the alarming fire risk in bins, the increasing hot, dry summers can result in such fires spreading to surrounding areas and putting pressure on emergency services, says the Green Party.
Councillor Critchison has said:
“The destruction that improper disposal of these items causes is completely avoidable.
“The use of single-use disposable items should always be discouraged but especially those that can cause harm to children and wildlife and create public safety concerns.
“Banning their use will hopefully support people to choose better options, and parish and town councils could be encouraged to provide suitable sustainable facilities in public spaces.“
Following her urgent question at last week’s Environment and Community Protection Committee, Cllr Critchison is also requesting that in future the Council looks to implement a Public Space Protection Order to enforce the ban on disposable barbeques across all Council land from next year, in addition to prohibiting the release of lanterns and balloons due to the environmental damage they cause.

in addition to prohibiting the release of lanterns and balloons due to the environmental damage they cause.
of course the greens aren’t bothered about the damage to the environment that digging up land in africa to get the metals and minerals to make their mobile phones causes, or the degradation of the environment by the sweat shops making the cheap clothes they wear, that were made in bangladesh, vietnam, china etc or the pollution created, shipping them to the uk
Um…they are actually. Unfortunately though they are not in power so can’t dictate foreign policy or trade agreements. Neither can they lobby the countries who run the sweat-shops, or even the big businesses who profit heavily from them. They are, however, aligned to organisations who can, and do (Fairtrade, Amnesty, etc)…but again, without Government interventions and the clout of trade threats. But don’t underestimate the power of campaigners, they’re the only party thus far that’s raised consciousness. See also Climate Change.
They should be banned everywhere.
They should be, so should disposable Vapes.
Do keep up! disposable Vapes have been banned.
Idiots are still walking around with them.
I bet money many shops are still selling them
on the island.
Who stops them!
Green councillor who is desperate for relevance wishes all enjoyment to be banned, would it not be easier just to put a metal receptacle on each beach clearly signed hot disposable barbecues, then the councillor can sleep at night and go back to knitting their own clothes and eating tofu..
Or better still…there’s WATER in that sea…just put the feckin thing out and take rubbish home. There, that didn’t cost anyone anything, did it? If you’d rather pay extra council tax to employ a team to scour every beach daily and empty the bins though…..
Oh shut up..
What a reflective reply, you must be a green supporter, they are renowned for their literary eloquence
I thought disposable Vapes were banned, everywhere you
go Numpty’s are puffing on their plastic dummies
Goo Goo Ga Ga !
I wish these Numpty’s would grow up and act their age
and stop blowing their sh*t over everyone.
That crap comes from their lungs, filthy ********
if they have germs or viruses they are blowing their
crap in the air.
Ban Vapes too!, they are so anti-social
Banning these for a mistake or neglect from some idiots is not an excuse to ban them completely. For that matter ban all cars for speeding, ban the council for not fixing potholes in a timely manner. Ban everything Islander said as we all know that will happen.
Speeding is rife, the council don’t know how to
Stop motorists speeding on the island.
more freedom’s taken from the Great British people
That’ll be the Great British people who want the freedom of their idiocy to run rampant, setting light to things, leaving their rubbish for others to pick up (including the costs of taxes to pay for someone to do so etc) and causing hazards where there really shouldn’t be any? Same Great British people we need laws for to stop them doing things like theft, murder, violence etc? It’s because of people like them (and you, clearly) who value THEIR freedoms above everybody else’s that we need more and more laws. Generally it goes ‘anything is permissible unless it is expressly forbidden’. What a shame some people screw that for the rest of us. Your freedom does not, and will not, ever trump responsibility.
BBQs are already banned on a number of council beaches. Unfortunately, they do not enforce the ban and allow people to use them because it is easier than enforcing it. How about responsible disposal facilities and designated public BBQs instead. We see too many buried under the sand.
The Council couldn’t undo a packet of crisps between them.
Everyday when I drive to Newport, as entering Newport from
Fairlee Road just before St George’s roundabout the houses on
the right hand side, permanently has a car parked fully on the
pavement blocking the walkway for pedestrians.
This Council have no idea about safety etc. I have never known
such a useless bunch of individuals.
Roll on devolution, then REAL rules will apply, in the meantime
pedestrians are unable to walk on the pavement!
Civil Enforcement Officers etc must pass this everyday
do they drive with their eyes shout, wouldn’t surprise me.
Fire is a Good friend but a bad enemy the sooner there band the better
These barbecues are so dangerous. I really do not understand why they have not been outlawed before now. There is nothing to be said for how they are made now how they are used and disposed of, not to mention the fire risks.
