Just 6 months after a change of management The Taverners in Godshill has suddenly closed its doors.
It was in September last year that Tim and Emma Foster announced that they had decided not to renew their lease on the popular High Street pub, citing that they sought more family time.
Matt and Deanna took the helm as landlords during the first week of October, but just 6 months on, it has been announced that they too have now stepped away.
At 16:00 yesterday afternoon (Sunday), it was confirmed that the doors would be closing for the final time that very evening. Island Echo understands that staff were informed of the decision on Saturday morning, with customers contacted to have their reservations cancelled on Saturday afternoon.
The Taverners was once a well-thought-of pub, securing a place in the Top 50 Best Gastropubs in the UK. But recent Tripadvisor reviews paint a different picture… One review, left just a week before the closure, states:
“I was unaware that the ownership had changed and I can only assume the standards have gone dramatically downhill. The pub was quiet with only 2-3 other tables eating and no sign of anyone in for a drink so the atmosphere was non existent”.
It has been suggested that the pub will soon re-open under new management, the third in less than a year.
In a statement issued on social media, Matt and Deanna have said:
“With a heavy heart, we will close the doors for the final time this evening. HOWEVER, new owners are inbound and we wish them all the luck in the world. We thank you all”.
It has been confirmed that The Taverners’ sister pub, The Stag at Newport, will remain open.

All very odd.
Not really, pubs are expensive to go to and to run. Starmers new rule haven’t helped either. Same excuses as the Star, sorry Smokin’ Jacks in Wroxall, they closed but they did because of non disclosure of accounts to company house. Compulsory strike off they call it. I drive past it most days and it is looking a complete eyesore now.
If you have been there for Sunday lunch you will know that it is packed every week. There is more to this. I imagine there has been an almighty row and the tenants have walked. Pity because they were doing a fantastic job and will be missed.
I use to be a regular at Busy Bee Olive Tree
but over the last couple of months they have
increased their prices excessively.
Let’s not forget it is only a Garden Centre who
recently was awarded a 1 Star rating, yet they have
increased their Large coffees from £2.95 to £3.75
An excessive 27% increase.
I no longer visit this establishment, cheaper to
buy a Tesco meal deal, not only do I get a large
coffee, which is a Costa coffee.
I also get a Sandwich and a yoghurt and it costs
less than 1 coffee.
Businesses are getting greedy, since the pandemic
they have been taking the piss.
Enough is Enough
Most pubs just to expensive family of 4 £80 to £100 ..just not worth it no more..a steak couple of chips spoon of pees and if your lucky a mushroom ..£30 !!! come on
Most expensive pub is the Fishermens cottage in Shanklin
they even charge a ridiculous service charge.
They think Islanders are on London wages
Lol
Due to the recent Labour budget many businesses
are charging customers too much.
Instead of reducing their workforce by a couple of
members of staff, they keep increasing their prices.
The same can be said for the Fish and Chip shop
along Shanklin esplanade.
Prices keep going up, this fish and Chip shop employs
too many employees, majority of them stand outside
smoking or vaping.
Get rid of unnesseccary clutter and stop increasing prices.
I no longer go there, their loss is my gain.
I am not paying extra to pay for numpty employees
standing around smoking and vaping
Lol
Then you’ll moan about the dissolute youth not working
It’s just the beginning. Almost every business provides jobs, which provide taxes and national insurance, plus the business pays tax on materials, ingredients, rent, loans, profits, staff, etc, plus business rates. That should be enough, and everyone survives and contributes. Now the government is in a financial mess they are greadily strangling businesses with short-sighted desperation, piling on extra expenses, causing closures, unemployment and hopelessness. Look at any street and calculate in your head the council tax, it’s eye-watering amounts. However hard I try, I cannot work out where all that money is going. Suggestions please…?
The new world order is to finish off small businesses.
It’s happening.
