Cineworld in Newport could close over the winter months as a result of the continuing and devastating coronavirus pandemic, putting over 5,000 jobs on the line nationwide.
The cinema chain is expected to announce that it will be closing all of its outlets across the UK and Ireland until 2021, meaning around 5,500 jobs are at risk – including here on the Isle of Wight.
It’s thought that Cineworld will remain closed until April – another 7 months away – when the next James Bond film is released. ‘No Time to Die’ was meant to be released in the UK in April this year but was pushed back until November. The film has now been set back once again until 2nd April 2021.
The only other cinema on the Isle of Wight is Commodore Cinema in Ryde, operated by Leo Leisure.

Dark, dingy, no fresh air, crowds of unchecked people in close proximity, with no chance of seeing what the person to the side, in front or behind are doing.
Rarely could a more germ friendly building have been designed. No natural light, no fresh air or sunlight to destroy virus, imo better off without such places.
Just sat gawping at some highly paid, make believe character, being hero worshiped for doing little other than just ‘being’ is hardly essential, and certainly not worth the risk of harming real life people for.
Life ain’t the movies.
Better ring that bell so your mum can bring you your marmite sarnies .
Yes, the truth is rather painful at times, especially to those who enjoy ‘make believe’ and sadly then know more about fiction now than ‘real life.’
Just as the authorities like it. to be, Keep spoon feeding the masses fictitious tripe, and more will then be unaware of what such are doing and the real problems being allowed to happen in our once fine nation.
Best stay in your mum’s basement then if you hate life so much .
Try saying that to the poor people that are losing their jobs. If your that het up on covid stay locked away til you get your government vaccine til then allow some of us to enjoy our lives.
Sounds like you would be far happier in a work camp. Or prison. You miserable toad. Eradicating every last human vestige of entertainment because of a virus, which the VAST majority of people survive, is completely insane.
Pep, I fully see brans point of view and some would say that risking spreading any killer and life changing disease ‘just’ to view some make believe story, acted by someone who is nothing like that of who they portray, on a ‘large screen’, when you could watch it at home, albeit a little later (as IF that matters), is completely insane, selfish, and ignorant.
You can still get your fictitious fix on HD, so all is not lost, but others lives may be if this germ trap stays open when many fall victim over the long, wet, cold Winter to come.
Perhaps in the current crisis, adults should just grow up a little more and read stories to their children not have to have such make believe filling their empty heads for entertainment.
Keep taking the meds .
It’s called acting you idiot .the clue is in the title .
Idiot .
Can’t say I will miss the overpriced popcorn, fuzzy screens, and sticky carpets.
We can live without such now we all can have HD etc.
You can always just move your chair closer to your TV, tip treacle on the floor, take out your light bulbs, have your child not wash for a week, and to keep kicking the back of the chair whilst rustling a crisp packet, and then get the local yobs to shout out lewd abuse over your fence, and you won’t even know it has gone..
