A temporary restriction preventing people from parking on either side of Furrlongs in Newport has been lifted following backlash from local residents.
Yesterday morning (Monday) it was announced that no vehicles would be able to stop or park on Furrlongs as a result of the water main renewal works by Southern Water on nearby Staplers Road.
The news was met with anger from Pan residents who were not given prior notice about this pivotal change to parking in the local area.
Councillor Geoff Brodie stated yesterday that he had also not received any notification of the parking restriction affecting his ward, labelling it as ‘an absolutely ridiculous decision’.
He says there is no need for parking to be suspended on Furrlongs.
Now, following a day of pressure from Cllr Brodie and other parties, the Isle of Wight Council have confirmed that the temporary restriction has been lifted while it’s reviewed by Island Roads.
Southern Water have begun a 4 month scheme to replace 500m of water pipe on Staplers Road, which has resulted in a one-way traffic system being implemented.
Things got off to a rocky start yesterday when the road closure prevented buses and any other vehicle from using Furrlongs. The closure was soon moved further down Staplers to allow access to Pan.
