A fundraiser has been launched to support a young motorcyclist from Freshwater who is facing the amputation of his leg following a serious crash near Brook last week.
Emergency services were called to Brook Road near Chessell last Wednesday (11th June) following reports that a motorbike had left the carriageway.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance was scrambled to the scene, alongside paramedics and Police.
The rider, 22-year-old Harley Cottingham from Freshwater, sustained multiple limb-threatening injuries and was airlifted to Southampton General Hospital. His injuries include a broken pelvis, a snapped femur, multiple rib fractures, and a shattered knee.
Since the crash, he has undergone 3x 10-hour surgeries on his left leg. However, due to the severity of the damage, he is now facing the possibility of amputation.
He is expected to spend at least 6 weeks in hospital before beginning a long rehabilitation process. He is unable to return to work, and his partner – who has health conditions of her own – relied on him as her carer.
A GoFundMe campaign has been launched by a family member to help cover the couple’s rent, bills, and travel expenses during this critical time. The appeal has already drawn community support, with many touched by their story and circumstances.

Quote “Island Echo understands a male has sustained serious injuries after coming off his motorcycle at speed. No other vehicles have been involved.”
Tough as it sounds, No way will I be giving any cash to this fund. Drive at speed in a car or on a bike, hope for the best but expect the worst. Less speed = less injuries.
Very insensitive, think before you post. You can have life changing injuries coming off a bike at 25 30mph. This persons family is going through all of this and a young lad is having life changing surgeries. Get facts before you post insensitive comments or just keep your opinions to yourself. Guessing you have never had any one close to you go through this or a trauma similar and know what the family are going through.
It would be interesting to know what speed
the motorcycle was travelling at.
I thought insurers would cough up to help
in such cases, unless they know more than
we do!
No one cares what you think
Utter twat.
Anus by name, anus by nature. Shut up. No one care what you think
Correct! How about the ‘islandecho’ stop approving this chap’s inane comments, at least until he comes up with a more acceptable title for himself.
Blimey, people are so quick to sit in judgement on others. No one is talking about whose fault the accident was. The guy is badly injured and it is having a massive impact on both him and his partner so a relative has done something to try to help. If you don’t think the cause is deserving you don’t have to contribute but neither do you have to be so holier than thou. Let us hope he will not lose his leg and will, in due course recover.
Get in touch with British Bikers Releif Fund for support and advice. They helped when we went through the same. There are other groups out there that will also help, and I imagine you will need to communicate with people that understand exactly what you are going through. My thoughts go out to you at this devastating time but please remember that you will come through this in time and I hope you manage to get the financial support you will need. Best of luck.
