Plans to give an Isle of Wight restaurant an outside seating area would be ‘selfish’ and cause a ‘massive disservice’ to other local businesses, a neighbouring pharmacy has said.
Russell Canterbury, representing Ryde’s Gibbs and Gurnell pharmacy, joined two other members of the public in objecting to Mr H. Afsarian of Binstead Management’s application to expand Fumo33 on Ryde’s Union Street.
However, the proposal will be ‘beneficial’ for Union Street’s environment and offer further facilities for Ryde’s ‘main shopping and holiday area’, being attractive to both ‘Islanders and tourists alike’, a submitted Planning Statement said.
Mr Canterbury said:
“We have come across some news that Fumo is looking to encroach onto the current parking lot down Union Street right outside our shop.
“This would not benefit the public, already our elderly patients struggle to obtain medications when coming to the shop. We are also heading in a direction of more collection and less delivery.
“Should they require more space, there is a vacant unit at 49 Union Street available for rental directly opposite their premises. What we need along Union Road is more parking and a speed reduction in the street to 20 miles per hour to aid with parking on a rather difficult slope amongst a pedestrianised area.”
He added he did not believe ‘any’ of the other business owners would approve should the bid go ahead.
The applicant’s Design and Access Statement stated:
“The location of the seating area is sited outside Fumo restaurant adjacent to the pedestrian footpath of Union Street for the benefit of the restaurant customers.
“To enable the restaurant to accommodate greater seating capacity the design mirrors the existing concept along Union Street and the recently approved design outside the Festival Diner Bar at 61a.”
County Hall’s public consultation on application 25/01141/FUL finishes on 19th September, and a decision is expected on 13th October.

How nice to be eating outdoors on a big slope among the coming and going of so many cars and buses, breathing in all those concentrated exhaust fumes, watching people struggling to get where they are going and watching smokers outside ‘Spoons. ‘FUMO’ indeed.
Only a numpty would go to Spoons, you need to fight
your way in past smoking and vaping numpties.
Personally I wouldn’t go to Spoons if they were giving
food and drink away.
Time to ban numpties smoking and vaping in
doorways / entrances.
Spoon’s doorstaff don’t set a good example either. In my door days (the real version of) you were only allowed a smoke, now vape, break once every 3 hours and well away from public scruntiny.
After all you are reflecting the company you work for and because it looks so unprofessional, I wouldnt hire from you.
Union Street is a nightmare to park along, maybe if
the Councils Civil Enforcement Officers done something
about the vehicles that are parked along Union Street
all day it would help the flow of vehicles.
A few businesses leave their vehicles parked outside
their businesses all day.
What happened to the 1 Hour rule, or does that not apply
to everyone!
The rules on the island are a joke.
STOP the businesses leaving their vehicles parked along
Union Street all day.
Issue Civil Enforcement Officers glasses or book them in
to Specsavers to have their eyes tested.
If I can see the vehicles that are parked all day long, why
can’t they.
The worst culprit is a silver / grey Vauxhall
Very frustrating
Shaaat aaap you miserable old goat.
Too many Numpties are lawless on the island,
they should think of other persons, selfish B’stards.
Far too much of this pavement blocking by cafes. No consideration for blind and disabled people. Union Street is not suitable for this sort of encroachment.
I am surprised vehicles don’t park on the pavement
along Union Street, they allow it in Sandown and Shanklin
Lol
love it, anything to annoy the moany bunch
Businesses struggle, tourism dwindles, bills can’t be paid. Businesses do something to boost their economy and all people do is complain?!? Then businesses have to shut down and all these keyboard losers cry that there isn’t anything left on the island. Make your mind up, even we try and keep this place afloat or watch our house value plummet to the minus and have to leave to the mainland due to desolation of this place. Change has to happen to invoke growth, all you boomers need to settle down and realise the newer generations have to take control otherwise we’d be screwed.
It would give the junkies somewhere to sit while they wait for their methadone.
It’s nice to sit outside in the Summer but sitting amongst parked cars doesn’t appeal. Apart from fumes & noise have you seen the standard of driving & parking on the Island? You’d be taking your life in your hands sitting in the road next to a parking bay
I can think of better places to visit for lunch.
Well go to them then.
Russell is a nasty LITTLE man who has no care for customers.
He worries about elderly customers parking but is getting rid of the delivery service.?
I know he had a massive chemical spill last year that when mixed could of killed people and yet he still stayed open, putting the public and staff at major risk!
He needs investigating properly.
I think the outdoor seating is a great idea The more people can sit and relax outside a nice restuarant, the better! The UK doesn’t do enough for tourist’s. 20 mile an hour zones just create more revenue for a Council that already abuses it’s citizens with immorally high taxes. Maybe the chemist should reduce footfall for it’s elderly customer’s with an effective delivery service. I’m sure their elderly customer’s would be most grateful!
Rearrange seating internally, make good use of space, and don’t block even more of Union Street.
The useless council should stop the vehicles who leave their
vehicles park all day long along Union Street.
I suggest Civil Enforcement Officers having a eye test so they
can see the offenders.
FUME O!. Clues in the title. Who in there right mind would want to eat outdoors on Union Street?
Maybe a tipple and some Ssschmoking but where’s the money in that.
