A lorry that has left the road near Yaverland after its driver took evasive action to avoid an oncoming vehicle has been prevented from rolling over by a road sign.
Island Echo is told that a car exited Culver Down Road – at the junction with Sandown Road – without stopping, forcing the lorry driver to swerve. As he did, the edge of the carriageway gave way under the weight of the fully laden aggregate lorry.
The lorry almost rolled over but a sign post is thought to have been a saving grace, just about keeping the lorry upright.
Thankfully, the driver has escaped injury but the DAF HGV has grounded out and is going no where in a hurry.
The main Sandown to Bembridge road remains open under give and take but delays are likely when recovery gets underway later this morning.
UPDATE – The road has now been closed whilst recovery by Stag Lane Motors gets underway.
UPDATE @ 14:49 – The road has now re-opened.

Hang on a minute lads, I got a great idea
You’re only supposed to blow the bloody doors off!
So that’s what happens if you give cyclists the recommended clearance?
“Island Echo is told that a car exited Culver Down Road – at the junction with Sandown Road – without stopping.”
Not too hard to understand.
There is no way that road sign prevented the lorry from tipping over, it was probably just sheer luck more than anything else, the lorry is full of ballast, hopefully it’s fitted with CCTV, Culver down road is a dangerous turn to exit out of.
The car driver is obviously yet another island Drugged up chav scumbag…
On a Tuesday mid-morning?
More likely one of the old codgers that clog up our roads.
You’ll be an old codger before long.
Funny how you don’t have an issue with someone assuming the driver was young and a “Drugged up chav scumbag”, which is highly unlikely given the time of the day, but get all butthurt should someone suggest the driver might be old.
Guessing you are one of those doddery old codgers.
Let’s hope there is evidence of the car that came out in front of the truck, and let’s hope it’s not another case of a distracted driver not paying attention to where the edge of the road is…
what about the driver who pulled out was he or she stopped???the lorry driver could have been killed.
he
Yet another car driver that does not look both ways… I almost got hit today as a vehicle pulled out in front of me.. then a few mi8nutes later following a white Ford van, suddenly braked, put on right hand indicator, and turned left !!! Lucky for me I am not a bumper hugger..
Also is there NOT a speed limit along Ryde Esplanade ? Cars and motorbikes racing along the front… insane … guess there will be many more this weekend, plus racing around Ryde canoe lake.. revving engines.’ Hey everyone look at me I am a dick head ‘
No way that road sign prevented the lorry from tipping over. Compared to the lorry with its load, it’s like a matchstick. Luck prevented that lorry from tipping over….
Yes, as always the media like to put their own sensational twist on it…
It might be one of Island Roads better jobs!!
Yet another arrogant narcissistic prick that thinks the rules don’t apply to them and can do as they please that should not be allowed to hold a driver’s licence or buy or own a motor vehicle that truck driver could have be killed or severely injured just for doing his job the driver that caused this if found should be banned from holding a driver’s licence for the rest of his/her life fined £100,000 and sent to prison for 10 years with no possibility of early release that will soon make these arrogant assholes think about it before drink driving drug driving or just driving like they are above the rules and laws endangering people’s lives and safety the way they do with their driving attitudes
Witnessed a lorry similar to this one, on Blacklands Lane a few weeks ago driving at speed, then going on grass verge as it approached me. There was more than enough space on the road for both of us.
