Former Isle of Wight teacher Edgar W Fentum – now resident in California – has written his first book, ‘Worlds Apart’, at the grand old age of 90.
Worlds Apart, published by Amazon, chronicles Edgar’s life journey on 3 continents.
Ed first arrived on the Island to live in Shanklin with his parents and three brothers in 1947. He attended Ryde Secondary Modern School and worked at Ryde Town Hall before being conscripted into the Army.
As a sergeant in the Royal Army Education Corps, he was posted to Albany Barracks and entrusted with leading the Education Centre for the 76th Heavy Anti-Aircraft Regiment.
In 1954, Ed furthered his education at Loughborough College and went on to become a physical education teacher at Woodlands School in Coventry. In 1961, he returned to the Island to become head of Physical Education at Priory Boys School in Newport. Later, he held the same position at Carisbrooke Comprehensive School and at Ryde Comprehensive School.
His passion for sports led to establishing the Nomads Basketball Club In 1963. It became the first Island club to compete on the mainland.
Together with his wife Molly (née Corlett), whose family owned Corlett’s Confectionery on Sandown’s High Street, Edgar played an instrumental role in renovating and building Auckland Hotel on Queens Road in Shanklin.

I’m pleased he no longer work in education.
Age is only a number, proof one is never too old
to achieve their goal, well done.
This is a good example to all Employers who have a
problem employing persons because of their age.
The older generation as a lot to offer in the workplace.
