The former Made on the Isle of Wight shop and garden centre on the outskirts of Ryde could be demolished to make way for new houses.
Plans have been submitted to the Isle of Wight Council by Henry Morris to build 2x 4-bed houses in the style of ‘modern interpretations of a converted rural barn’ on the site of the former Bullen Mead Nursery, on Bullen Road, between Nettlestone and Ryde.
To make space for the new family houses, which will have a playroom and outdoor kitchen area, a number of garages and amenity outbuildings, the old barn and glasshouses will be demolished.
The shop, which sold products exclusively made on the Island, shut in 2016, with planning documents citing insufficient footfall as the reason for its demise and talks have been ongoing to develop the brownfield site since 2017.
In planning documents, it was said the landowner, Robin Courage, Isle of Wight Day founder and former High Sheriff of the Isle of Wight, was looking to build 6 houses on the site but following talks with the council it is now considered only 2 would be acceptable.
Previously, planning permission was given in July 2016 to change the use of the retail barn into a home but that has now expired.
The designs for the new houses will take reference from a ‘rural past’, with planning documents saying the ‘use of materials combined with the layout and landscaping approach leads to a highly responsible and respectful solution which will enhance the context and character, while allowing sensitive change to take place.’
To view the plans, or comment on the application, 21/00110/FUL, you can view the council’s planning portal. Comments will be accepted until 19th March.

More houses, unbelievable the Islands infrastructure is struggling now.
Doctors, dentist’s !
When will this end.
When every blade of grass is gone!
Whitehall, or at least Central Office, has spoken and must be obeyed, no matter how daft. At least this one is sort of brownfield.
It has been a long known, mid term ploy to start a ‘nursery’ run it for a few years on cheap agricultural land, and then gain easy permission on brown land to either say you ‘need’ a house built there for yourself for tending the plants and security IF the businesses is paying OR, as here, run it down, say no longer profitable and make a killing from planning permission. ONLY ONE house for the owner ‘should’ be permitted to stop such scams.
All the right ‘names’ though so ‘a given’
Unless we ALL v o t e in May’s e l e c t i o n. Do it.
And employment will be at……..
Any chance of just one brain cell on this Island? Certainly not it the corridors of power
Watch this space just opposite this site they have been cutting down trees last few days I bet your bottom dollar way hay. Planning for more homes. We want be able to breathe. Never mind covid.
That opposite was never theirs to cut, that is the old school site. This needs proof of ownership to do such work.
Unbelievable..can hardly be called brownfield. No doubt the ploy for now is 2 houses. I wonder if one will be “affordable”.
Surprise surprise … more houses more money for fat cat developers !
Full of the usual BS in an attempt to influence the planners
Is that land still owned by a former Island High Sheriff?
The Sheriff, seems more likely to be those on the other side of the bars!
Put in for four, really only expecting two, then it ‘appears’ you have had your application ‘scaled down’ so not just a ‘given’ to the dim watching such process in action, AND it appears the ‘planners’ are being actually considering the application with respect to the environment when likely it is ‘who’ you know, and how grateful you are.
Disgusting and the whole planning needs to be voted on by the local Ryde council before gaining permission as then less easy to be corrupt.
No no no no, hee-haw, hee-haw, hee-haw, no no no……..
If we don’t build houses the younger generation, who supply the services that you love, will move to the mainland making the island the island of the walking dead.
Get you head out of your arse, else the island will die like so many other holiday locations in the UK.
