A flood alert for the Isle of Wight Coast has been issued by the Environment Agency this afternoon (Thursday). This latest announcement has come following a day of heavy rain across the Island, with more heavy downpours set to continue throughout tomorrow (Friday) and into the weekend. Friday morning’s tide at 10:00 is higher than normal due to the unsettled weather and strong winds. For 1 hour – on either side of high water – flooding of seafront roads, esplanades and car parks is expected. Water levels will be very high in Cowes, affecting Medina Road and the floating bridge as well as Sea Street in Newport. In East Cowes, seawater will cause minor impacts to the roads forced up through drains. The ferry terminal car park at Yarmouth will flood. A series of spring tides with similar flood impacts will be seen across the weekend. Advice from the Environment agency has said:
“We will issue further advice. We continue to monitor the forecast. The tide will come near to the top of front door steps at Medina Road. Well Road, East Cowes may be affected by water in the road. As a precautionary measure, and if you have it, we recommend that flood protection is installed at Medina Road 1 hour before high tide.”
UPDATE @ Friday 14:14 – The Environment Agency has extended its flood alert for the Isle of Wight coast. Tonight’s high tide at 22:56 will be higher than normal due to unsettled weather with light Southerly Force 1 winds. The weather increases tide table values by 0.62m. The total forecast tide is 4.88 metres Chart Datum (2.29 mAOD) at Cowes. For 1 hour either side of high water, very minor impact flooding will affect some sea front roads, esplanades and car parks across the Island. Water will be high up slipways in Cowes, affecting Medina Road and the floating bridge. The tide may rise to be only 0.1m below the top of front door steps. In East Cowes, seawater forced up through drains may cause very minor impacts to the road at Albany Road.

Someone needs to open the Wooton ‘lake’ floodgates a bit so the bridge doesn’t get flooded again ! The lake fills up quicker than the sluice gate lets water out = flood in heavy rain. When will they learn ?

Don’t worry about climate change, Donald told me it’s all fake news. Nothing is flooding. Although, not sure why there is water lapping around my feet, must be fake, Donald said it is.
