A small gorse fire has been extinguished by firefighters on the outskirts of Ryde this evening (Sunday) – with a rather unusual method of transport utilised.
1 appliance from Ryde was mobilised to reports of a fire close to the Island Line network some time before 20:50.
Due to the hard-to-reach location of the reported fire, the retained crew ‘commandeered’ a train to travel along the track to the scene of the incident, between Ryde and Brading.
The fire, located near to Harding Shute, was eventually extinguished using a light portable pump with water sourced from a nearby stream. The equipment was loaded onto the train.
Island Line is once again running between Ryde Pier Head and Shanklin.

Well done, guys, thinking outside the box.
Would you like to give our useless council a few tips on innovative problem-solving?
I was on the train last night. Lots of Real Life added drama – all for £3 retiurn. What a bargain.
Once this whole, soon to be ‘developed’ area is under concrete, tar-mac, and block paving, the fire brigade can resort back to normal methods of dousing burnt out trashed cars, motor cycles, and of course the odd arson on a rival ‘dealers’ home.
Quaint naughty boys camp fires will be resigned to the history books and dull tales from your grandparents, as the Island is plunged screaming into the 21st enriched Century.
Remember where you heard what you didn’t want to accept.
Well sooner its tarmaced ect the better, so if the trains weren’t working what then.
