Firefighters responded to a property in Upper Ventnor earlier this evening (Saturday) when a tumble dryer sparked an emergency call out.
3 appliances from Newport and Shanklin responded to Newport Road shortly before 18:30 following a 999 call to fire control.
Crews arrived on scene to find that the fire was already out, but 2 breathing apparatus and a hose reel jet were utilised when entering the residential address.
The tumble drier was removed from the property.

So no appliance from Ventnor, once again? – ‘Might as well close Ventnor fire station and turn it into flats, for all the good it does!
– And I am speaking as someone who was born, and grew up in Ventnor and was a retained fireman at that station for most of the 1980s, so it’s extremely sad for me when I read ,time and again that incidents in Ventnors “patch” have to be attended by other stations.
Wow, what a busy day. Three appliances for a faulty domestic appliance and then three crews for a smelly toilet.
Glad to see we are in such safe hands.
3 crews for a tax credit funded tumble dryer.
These are the poor who are supposed to be living in poverty. I can’t afford to tumble my attire now, but they can.
THREE fire engines….what does that cost for call out please…….but fire out before they arrive.
it’s the same on every call out three times more appliances than required.
Think about it.
I saw this. 3 fire trucks for absolutely nothing. Complete joke.
Why all this negativity about fire fighters doing their jobs? They were on duty so getting paid anyway. Getting them out and about helps keep away the boredom. The only added cost incurred is the cost of diesel to travel a very small distance.
I am afraid you are wrong.
Shanklin station are retained firemen so are paid for a call out. In so many cases for nothing.
As Jonathan states a joke.
it happens every week read the reports.
Sorry Ben but you don’t know how the “retained fire fighter” system works. They commit to be on-call for a certain number of hours per week and are paid for that committed time whether they get called out or not. The retained fire fighters at Shanklin would have been paid irrespective of whether they attended a tumble dryer fire or not. Thus, no greater cost was incurred for the call out other than the cost of diesel.
Dear Dogma
you are absolutely correct I do not seem to know how the retained fire fighter system works as well as you.
I was only stating what the IOW council stated in their recent advertisement for retained fire officers.
A basic annual payment (a retainer) of £2,246 and fees for emergency response at £10.26 per hour during training; rising to £2,993 and £13.67 respectively on achieving competence and a disturbance allowance of £3.94 for each call out.
Salary: £2,246 to £2,993 per annum
That equates to a call out of £17.61 per hour per man per fire engine x2 appliances from the time they are called out until they leave the station on return.
considerably more than you state of a a little diesel over a short distance.
Dogma
you are right Dogma I do not deem to understand how the “retained fire fighter “system works.
I was only quoting from the IOW council web site for “retained fire fighter” pay and informing readers.
IOW council states a basic annual payment (a retainer) of £2,246 and fees for emergency response at £10.26 per hour during training; rising to £2,993 and £13.67 respectively on achieving competence and a disturbance allowance of £3.94 for each call out.

Therefore each fire officer would have been paid £17.61 per hour from call out until leaving the fire station on return x five fire crew per appliance x two appliances.
A lot more than a little diesel for a short distance.
Well there you go. IoW is operating a different system compared with the rest of the country. No wonder they are all so keen to get called out for every smelly toilet and tumble dryer fire because they get extra dosh. Operate the same system as the rest of the country and there is no incentive for pointless call outs.
