P1 Wadhams in St. James’ Square, Newport recently welcomed the public through its doors when it held a Fashion Futures open day. Fashion Futures by Platform One is a recent collaboration whereby fashion students can learn about the fashion industry under the expert tutelage of Hannah Woodford, with input from technician Serena Copping. Sustainability is the watchword of the courses and there is excellent equipment and facilities for students to use. During the open day, the Fashion Futures concept store was open, featuring the students’ first clothing range, and in future months there will be other pop-up store openings. There were sustainability workshops for the public throughout the day, featuring the reworking of beading, denim, jewellery, crochet scrunchies and crochet with T-Shirts. P1 Wadhams Waste Challenge encouraged creating something from wastage that would normally end up in landfill. A local project, Community Collect, encouraging Island residents to let P1 Wadhams have any unwanted linen/cotton items such as tablecloths and tray cloths, especially if decorated with lace or embroidery, enabled the students to refashion the items into tops and shirts. Offcuts of these items were made into scrunchies. Rolls of fabrics, which otherwise would have been destroyed, have been donated by The Fold, London, and are available for students to use for their projects at a reasonable cost. On Friday 17th May, some of the students’ fashion creations will be on show at an event in aid of Wessex Cancer Support at GG’s Staplers Road, Newport. This event is in conjunction with Platform One Music.
