Fairlee Road – the main road in and out of Newport – will be closed overnight on Monday and Tuesday next week as work to complete the new Mews Lane junction nears completion.
Since early January, Island Roads has been working to improve the junction with Mews Lane and Fairlee Road, to link it with the new all-weather, shared-use path between the Riverside Centre and Mews Lane that was created last year.
The final part of the project will be surfacing works and this is scheduled to be done under a full road closure next week on Monday and Tuesday nights (20th and 21st February) between 19:30 and 06:00.
An Island Roads spokesperson has said:
“So far during the scheme we have worked under two-way lights and we’d like to thank the local community for its co-operation during the project. It really has been appreciated.
“The final surfacing is being done under a full road closure but at night-time when the roads are obviously quieter. We’d like to thank residents and business in advance for their continued support.”
Access to properties in the closed section of Fairlee Road – from a point 100 metres north to a point 100 metres south of Mews Lane – will be maintained as long as it is safe to do so.
A diversion will be in place during the road closure which will be signposted.

And once it’s finished building can start on new houses up there
And the planning application for the new housing development goes in when ?
I was under the impression that Mews Lane was an unmade unadopted road up to Little Fairlee Farm. If this correct, why has the short stretch from the end of the Cycleway to the main road had all this money and work undertaken with heavy duty concrete – and in particular to widen the junction to permit better vehicle access ?
As already commented, there is a large open field which has just been sold to the other side of where the Cycleway ends. If subsequently Planning Permission is sought for housing or accommodation, there needs questions asked as to who approved this great expense and disruption to Council taxpayers in preparing this junction for more than a “Cycleway” use, especially at this time of reviewing Council spending.
Correct. Yet another case of carrying out unnecessary works whilst avoiding the necessary. If anyone, that is any of those on here that actually live on this island you know who you are, takes a 2 minute walk, you would see a much better use of public money in the appalling state of the carriageway leading up to this?
The least Island Toads could do would be to resurface that part which they have thus far avoided doing, whilst the road is completely closed for the 2 nights. Will they do it? More chance of seeing a Wightlink Ferry run on time.
I can’t wait to see what the next little scam turns up with this rabble? The more I see of them, the less I believe they are actually working for the benefit of normal islanders.
I wondered this too when these works were first mentioned.
As far as I know, the road doesn’t go anywhere so why all the expense, time and effort?
Well, I think we all know why, don’t we? I just wish we had an honest and open Council who would tell us the truth.
Why don’t they fix the rest of Fairlee Road at the same time. Parts of it are still an absolute disgrace.
Because the council won’t get a big brown envelope from fixing a road but they will from getting this job done a planning will be put in for houses
Maybe Island Road could step up and tell us why they fill that so much money and time should be spent on this little lane to nowhere, wile the rest of Fairlee Rd is in shit state,
