Islanders have been turning their eyes to the skies this afternoon after a military Chinook was spotted flying above several Island towns this afternoon (Thursday).
The Royal Air Force Boeing Chinook CH-47 made a brief appearance in the air over Ryde and Lake before descending from its 1,800ft altitude over Sandown Airport.
The legendary twin-engined aircraft, which is capable of carrying 55 troops, or up to 22,000lbs of cargo, is one of 60 chinooks operated by the RAF and was present at the small airfield as part of a pre-planned training exercise. It spent several minutes hovering over Sandown’s airport before heading West towards Dorset.
Chinooks are no stranger to the Island though, with one of the 30m long aircraft landing at Seaclose Park at the beginning of last year as part of a patient transfer training exercise, as previously reported by Island Echo.
