£2.2million of additional funding has been allocated to the Isle of Wight Council to help the most vulnerable households with paying for energy bills or groceries.
The funding is an extension of the Household Support Fund and has been allocated by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP).
It takes the total amount given to the Isle of Wight Council to £5.6million – a total of £5,657,880.
Mims Davies, DWP Minister for Social Mobility, Youth and Progression, has said:
“The Household Support Fund has already helped vulnerable families across England through these challenging times and I am pleased it will continue to do so for another full year.
“This is just one part of our extensive and targeted £26 billion support package, which includes payments worth £900 for millions of people on benefits and additional support for disabled people and pensioners, whilst every household will continue to save money thanks to our Energy Price Guarantee.
“We also know that bearing down on inflation is one of the best ways to help families cope with rising bills, which is why the Prime Minister has made halving inflation this year one of his top priorities.”
Today’s news comes on top of extensive support for those in need in the coming months. The most vulnerable will receive direct payments in 2023/24, which include up to £900 delivered in 3 payments to those on means-tested benefits, a £150 payment for those on disability benefits, and £300 on top of Winter Fuel Payments for pensioner households.
Benefits and pensions will also increase by 10.1% in April, with the minimum wage seeing its largest-ever cash rise, hitting £10.42 an hour. And more widely, the Energy Price Guarantee will save the typical household £500 in 2023/24.

So even more money for the dole scroungers and druggies to go and waste. Meanwhile those of us that work and pay taxes get little or no help, just a measly increase in our pay, if we’re lucky. Never mind I guess the extra those scroungers get will go on and buy them more fags and booze and cause problems later down the line for the NHS too. What a great idea. NOT.
A blanket definition of ‘druggies’, ‘scroungers’ and ‘layabouts’ seems a bit harsh but it would be very interesting to learn what factors identify a household as ‘vulnerable over any other struggling home.
Anything else the sponging layabouts need – you know, have a taxpayer come round and polish the cutlery.
where are the tax cuts for those that actually work to pay their bills.
More benefits for a lot of scroungers who can’t be bothered, I am seriously thinking about not working now,I can start getting all the latest trends then
so is it £2.6m (Headline) or £2.2m (1st line of article) ?
doesn’t really matter, but a bit of consistancy in reporting would be good
Must come a point when benefit claimants become less vulnerable than those who don’t claim benefits. But if you don’t claim benefits, you’re not on the radar.
So basically the lazy get more hand outs and the workers get nothing perfect
Most ”vulnerable” comes in two categories. The first is the waste of space smack rats and swillers who the DWP seem to think have a right to live a life of Riley and get everything for free, the other ”vulnerable” is all us mugs who are struggling to eat and keep warm who get everything taken from us in higher taxes and insurances and anything else we can be screwed out of, to balance out the billions going out on these freeloading low life. Anything WE might be getting from the DWP is either cut or stopped all together, or the scum either steel it, smash it or set fire to it. TIME FOR SOME PRIORITIES AND PRINCIPLES from the DWP for those paying IN
Many people work and get child tax credits and or working tax credits
Isn’t it about time all islanders got some help it’s always and every time there’s help the same ones keep getting it time after time ,this is not how it should be ,I thought we were supposed to be all treated equally .
this is very much one sided
I gave my council tax discount back, I only kept the energy payments because I couldn’t figure out how to pay it back.
I don’t take hand outs
Single parent 3 kids 3 different fathers you well in keep up the scrounging .Something a miss here that’s for sure
Has anyone worked out yet why all our council tax and income tax and national insurance are going up so much, and also why our pensions and disablement benefits are being cut and our public services? It is to put more money into the snorters and swillers free loading scrounging pot for their free hand outs and benefits and a free home. Why should they get £900 to blow on snort and swill, while we go cold and struggle to eat, and screwed out of our own money that we have paid in all our working lives to pay for a pension?
council tax, income tax and NI are three levers that the government has to pull, when they wish to remove currency from circulation, in an attempt to quell any inflationary forces.
The state employs cost push inflation, to remove currency as well- by increasing the taxes on gas/electric/petrol/diesel/alcohol, tobacco etc and then goes after more corporation tax, dividend tax and pension taxes as well.
They do not really care if one health department gets more money and one gets less – it is about the health of the financial system – too much money sloshing around creates inflation and devalues the pound in your pocket and can collapse the system, too little money in circulation, has the opposite, but same effect
All pensioners and those on a low income (working) received the cost of living payment. I am too ill to work and it is unkind to assume that all are “snorters and swillers”. Pensioners also travel for free and have the winter fuel payment. I am fortunate that I own my home, others have to pay extortionate rent and simply cannot afford it, despite working full time. Please consider your comment carefully along with others.
In a supermarket the other day ,I was behind a couple who had their trolley laden with wine,
