Elenors Grove between Binstead and Fishbourne has fully reopened in both directions tonight (Wednesday), a month earlier than originally expected.
Southern Water has now completed its water main replacement works in the area, which began on 2nd February, which has involved replacing around 500m of ageing water mains and connections in a bid to reduce leaks and improve water pressure.
When the works were first announced, they were expected to continue until at least 10th April with a one-way system in place and no access towards Ryde.
But, much to the joy of motorists, the project has been completed ahead of schedule and the main road connecting Ryde and Newport has now reopened in both directions – a whole month sooner than initially thought.

The reopening of Elenors Grove also means Firestone Copse Road can now reopen after being closed during the works to prevent motorists from using the narrow route as an unofficial diversion, albeit legitimately.
Although the early completion brings relief for motorists, disruption in the Binstead area is set to continue in the weeks ahead.
Island Roads is due to return to Binstead Road in April to continue resurfacing works that previously caused significant disruption.
At the same time, SGN is beginning a major programme to replace ageing gas infrastructure along Binstead Road and surrounding streets – which will last until May 2027. About time, if works were carried out on weekends it
would have finished much earlier.
Now get the traffic lights in Lake sorted out, a right
pain in the A@se.

Why are they replacing gas pipes?
Mad Ed says 100% electricity all the way.
The same Ed who doesn’t know how to eat a
Bacon sandwich.
Well done for completing this work in a shorter time. Strange that SGN wants 14 months to work on a similar length of road.
Preparing for new builds.
Ok, great the works were finished early, that’s how it should be done. BUT I drive this route multiple times during the day and they did not need to close the road one way, it would have worked just fine with 3-way traffic signals, buses were able to get through so it could have worked with short light changes. Also no need to close Firestone, we were told it was for safety for worker laying pipes along that route?? Next one please…
So true, anyone would think the Council have shares in
fuel.
Credit where credit is due, well done to the contractors for finishing so well ahead of schedule despite having had to work through some very wet weather conditions
