Police have confirmed that the elderly driver of a Kia that crashed into a wall in Ventnor yesterday afternoon (Tuesday) has sustained serious injuries.
Police were called by ambulance colleagues to Leeson Road at around 14:42 when a Kia Pride left the carriageway and careered head-on into a retaining wall.
Firefighters worked to extricate the male by forcing the driver’s door open.
Paramedics from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service then immediately tended to the driver, who had sustained serious injuries and was taken to hospital. It is thought he may have suffered a medical episode whilst at the wheel.
The area was cordoned off yesterday evening with mainland-based Roads Policing officers drafted in to conduct on-scene investigations.
A spokesperson for Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary has said:
“We were called by ambulance colleagues at 2.42pm on Tuesday 25 April, following a single vehicle collision in Leeson Road, Ventnor. The driver of the vehicle, an 80-year-old man, sustained serious injuries and was taken to hospital.”

Just as well he veered that way & not the other way,.. there’s a hell of a drop the other side of the road (50-100 foot)
OMG! Dare not think about that ! Hope he will be ok.
Shame as it looked like a nice blue sky day there in Ventnor.
Hope the old guys ok, there should be compulsory driving re-tests for all old people over the age of 60, every 2 or 3 years maybe?
Don’t blanket all in that category, ageist!
There should be a system in place similar to how Type 1 Diabetics have to reapply for a license pending a check in with the GP for glaucoma, etc. It is to some extent going to be the same sort of complications in health.
There is. If you have any kind of eye condition that can deteriorate such as glaucoma or macular degeneration, you have to reapply for your licence every year accompanied by a certificate from your optician.
I have had and have glaucoma, but only one eye.. but it is not bad enough to stop driving… as they invented glasses…but when others brains starts thinking like you, then our roads will never be safe..
Totally agree but it need to be “compulsory driving tests for ALL drivers every 2 or three years”…..
And just how many driving examiners would we need for that exactly?
One way of keeping the unemployment figures down…..
And, given their awful pay (£28,300 is the average), how does the ironically named “Truthsout” expect to persuade people to become examiners?
It would not matter as the person being tested would have to pay… it’s not the NHS…
And what about the youngsters that have trouble keeping on the road?Should they retake tests as well? Along with a drug test?
We have to work until we are 68 but need our driving skills tested at 60, how do you think that would work!
Same for all drivers under 25. And all drivers between 25 and 60 should be re-tested every 10 years.
How very dare you suggest that just because our reaction times are slower, and our memory isn’t as good, and sometimes our hands don’t do what we want that we should have to be re tested! This is a power play to humiliate the people that built this country. Kids these days have it too easy.
Maybe a system similar to that used for private pilots would be an idea?
We have to revalidate our licence every two years. This is done with a licenced instructor (not an examiner) and is purely a check that you are still capable of flying the aircraft safely.
Note that it’s not a full test and is conducted by an instructor, not an examiner.
Requiring drivers to spend 1/2 and hour with driving instructor every few years to check they are still capable of driving safely would not be too onerous.
/seems many young drivers think they are flying…
should be compulsory retests for everyone every ten years !! If you think not, then maybe you need a retest now !!!
Hope he recovers soon, however, I think his driving days are over….
I tried to report an elderly man to the police the other day. He was veering all over the road, and spent more time driving in the verge than he did the road. I was asked did I have dash cam footage, was there any other witnesses no to both. You do not need to report this incident. Unbelievable
I wished there was some way of uploading my dashcam footage, so that the police could follow up on drivers.
Yes, you can upload footage to Crime Stoppers, but why bother? Nobody will investigate. If it is that bad, put it on YouTube or Face book, If it goes viral then they might be shamed into doing something
There is.
Hampshire Police have a website where you can report incidents and upload dashcam footage.
Get a dash cam then…
He needed checking over. A lady did something similar here in Norfolk, apparently she had, had a stroke & lost sight in one eye. Thankfully the police intervened & she was blue lighted to hospital.
Yet another pensioner how many is that what are the men in black doing
Hopefully one day we will all become pensioners but the way some young drivers think it’s ok to drive full of alcohol and drugs I’m beginning to think that I may not make it.
Defending the galaxy from alien scum
Elderly driver! Medical episode!…. Never. Whilst I hope the driver makes a good recovery, when will it be time to make sure drivers are safe to be on the road, the same as HGV and PSV drivers have to be! A car is just as dangerous as a bus Lorry.
Umm, no it isn’t. If you are stopped in your car and are hit from behind by another car doing 40, you will probably survive.
It it was a 40 ton truck, you’re probably dead.
I was talking of all machines on the road being killing machines. More aimed at hitting people. I believe you have missed the point.
I feel the same way as yourself! There seems to be a lot of these accidents with the elderly. And don’t shout me down, it’s a fact!
Because there are a lot of elderly people on the island compared with other parts of the country. About 30% are aged over 65 on the island.
Not as many as the under 40’s but then don’t let facts ruin a good rant.
Trying to get an elderley person to give up their licence is an absolute nightmare. Tried to stop my Dad driving following several near misses, .Doctors would not help, nor the police, finally reported to DVLA in March 2021, he died in December 2021 and he still had his licence, its a nightmare. No one will listen.
Fortunately elderly drivers who suffer medical emergencies are driving slower and often cause less carnage. Unlike the drug drivers
“Fortunately elderly drivers … are driving slower”
seemingly this one was going fast enough to have “sustained serious injuries ”
so perhaps not….
although sometimes they do drive frustratigly slowly, (20-25 in a 60) which can also be dangerous…
It was an old car and probably did not have airbags etc.
It can also be dangerous when driving at 60 in a 30 speed limit which you come across a lot on the island….
Medical problems can happen at any age, I am sure he didn’t expect to end up crashing into the wall when he set out that day. Hope the guy recovers well.
