A driver in his 80s who crashed into a motorcycle has had his licence revoked at the roadside after failing an eyesight test.
Police were called after the elderly male, driving a Suzuki Liana, was involved in a collision with a black Yamaha motorcycle.
The incident happened yesterday evening (Wednesday) on Staplers Road in Newport.
It soon became apparent to responding officers that an issue was present.
An eyesight test was conducted on the Liana driver, which they failed. As a result, PC Bull of the Roads Policing Unit revoked their licence there and then.
PC Bull has said:
“There are a multitude of ways us RPU Officers can deal with incidents at the road side and revocation of licence is an immediate way of reducing risk of further injury on our roads.
“Please make sure your eye sight is correct. It’s your responsibility”.
The motorcyclist, a man in his 20s, suffered minor injuries.
Driving and your eyesight - What are the legal requirements?
You must be able to read (with glasses or contact lenses, if necessary) a car number plate made after 1st September 2001 from a distance of 20 metres.
You must also meet the minimum eyesight standard for driving by having a visual acuity of at least decimal 0.5 (6/12) measured on the Snellen scale (with glasses or contact lenses, if necessary) using both eyes together or, if you have sight in one eye only, in that eye.
You must also have an adequate field of vision - your optician can tell you about this and do a test.

Mr Magoo got caught. Good. They should run a campaign of road blocks and sight test every driver. Dozens if not hundreds will fail.
I hope the same applies to all the young twats driving high on drugs with no insurance !
Its always the young ones! While I was out yesterday an old twat in a honda jazz pulls straight out infront of me without looking ( I had my 10 year old and pregnant mrs in the car) then proceed to try and brake test me although i was a good distance behind. The on the dual carriage an old lady pulls of the slip road cutting me up. So yea all these young twats are no where near as bad as the dangerous old bints that have obviously forgotten or cannot drive according to the law/ highway code
younger people have better reflexes and eyesight fact.
Will they be charged? No, the police don’t care about low level crime. Not enough of them. One of the national papers looked at all the figures. In one area there were over 600 cases of blackmail, no one was charged. They no longer investigate thefts or breaks in. If you find that you can’t get a job and have no monkey, fill ya boots. Go mug a load of people. They can’t / won’t do anything. Not enough police.
Is that English ??
Is the motorcyclist okay?
Article says only minor injuries so hopefully they are okay.
I’ve said it before with hgvs you have to have a medical every year once you hit 65. It should be the same with cars.
Who will do this?
Train drivers have a full medical every 3 years, until the age of 40, then it’s an enhanced medical every 2 years, then after age 50 – enhanced medical every year.
Absolutely no reason why something similar couldn’t be rolled out to car drivers.
I think a Driving licence should only last 10 years at a time. Then its complete new training for another licence. Proper instruction, eye tests etc.. Would be interesting to know how many used a computer or mobile to do mock driving tests, until they got a pass many times, before booking driving test, so no actual one to one instruction.. Need a law stating at least 4 hours of one to one lessons by qualified driving teacher, BEFORE able to book test. If you reading this, do not think you would pass a driving test again, then maybe you should not be driving !!
The advice from the Police is helpful, if only the very same people who shouldn’t be driving and will someday kill someone could actually read this article!
Anybody over 70 should be re-tested
Bad eyesight can affect any age .
Why when the majority of accidents are caused by 30-40 year old drivers.
This is slightly misleading. Proportionately (number of licence holders vs number of accidents), it is under 21’s and over 55’s who have the highest accident rate.
Proportionately the island accident rate is 19% higher than national average.
25 to 35 are at higher risk for an accident with fatal injuries, according to data from the National Safety Council
Hallelujah, another dangerous wrinklie off the road.
what? thats a very true statement!
There are plenty of dangerous non-wrinklies on the roads.
I find your idiotic comment hilarious, you will be a “wrinklie” at some point.
Should of stuck to driving his tractor.
There are plenty of people driving on Island Roads under 70 years of age who should have their licence revoked!
Absolutely this is ageism plain and simple, who cares if he can’t see then, they were one a motorbike they were asking for it.
20 metres to read a number plate, I don’t think I could do that and don’t think a lot of people can? And I’m not old!
then if you are a driver your licence should be revoked for failing the eyesight test
By law, you need to inform the DVLA of this and surrender your licence if you can’t meet the basic medical standards to drive.
Please note another pensioner who shouldnt be driving…..
retest at pension age, then if you fail you have a bus pass.
retest anyone who gets a driving ban.
do a medical every ten years after you get a license to stay compliant.
accident numbers would fall quite fast i think.
