UPDATED: The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue service have this morning (Thursday) attended Ryde Pier Head following an alarm activation that echoed through the town.
An extremely loud alarm could be heard right across Ryde for over 30 minutes prompting numerous reports to Island Echo from concerned residents, some of whom had been woken from their sleep.
Island Echo understands an alarm activation at Ryde Pier Head resulted in firefighters from Ryde and Newport turning out to the Esplanade at around 01:15, with three pumping appliances and a smaller Land Rover Defender in attendance.
Thankfully, it is believed no fire was discovered and crews left the scene just before 02:00. The alarm was silenced.
UPDATE @ 09:00 – A spokesperson for Wightlink has confirmed to Island Echo that the alarm was activated due to a fault with the link span and could not be silenced until a technician arrived.
The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue were called by members of the public amid fears of a fire.
This incident follows a number of separate reports of increased helicopter activity across the Northern and Eastern shores of the Island at around midnight. No further information is currently available on this.
