A 25-year-old man from Shanklin has been summoned to court after he was stopped by Police on Friday night. Officers from Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary noticed the scooter being ridden on the wrong side of the road and on the pavement on St Paul’s Crescent at around 23:30 on Friday evening. The rider was found to be driving without a licence and insurance. Under current laws in the United Kingdom it is illegal to use privately-owned e-scooters on the pavement or on public roads. The case will dealt with to a conclusion under the single justice procedure. An Isle of Wight Police spokesperson has said:
“This e-scooter was being used on the wrong side of the road, the pavement, at speed, at night and was an accident waiting to happen. “The scooter has been seized, the owner will not see it again and will face a court summons for various offences.”

Let me guess £25 fine
I wonder how may old people ride there scooters on the pavement and the road have driving licences and insurance or is that a different law
Boomers, they do what they like and get away with it. But when someone wants to save some pennies and use one of these instead of a car, throw the book at them.
You cannot get insurance to ride one of these lethal contraptions, these are mainly used by teens it would appear but can only be used on private land with the land owners permission.
A Beryl scooter, which are just as dangerous, you require a minimum of a provisional driving licence and are covered by third party insurance by the company.
They can be tracked by the company in case of theft or misuse and a lot of countries are now banning them completely.
You clearly haven’t used one! They are far less of a threat than a push bike or a mobility scooter.
Look at how many old people end upside down in cars but we aren’t banning them from the roads.
And you clearly haven’t dealt with an incident that involves one of these deathtraps waiting to happen here have you.
An accident waiting to happen?!
Have the police been sitting indoors with the curtains shut or something? Almost everyday I see one of these things being ridden in about the most unsafest of ways. On pavements, in the wrong direction, and often when there are cars and pedestrians in the vicinity. and they’ve only just twigged that they’re accidents waiting to happen?
Come on police. Wake up!
How many drink drivers had their cars confiscated on Friday?
No idea!! when you find out you can publish it on here and we’ll all know.
Well done the Police, about time.
Now come to Ryde Esplanade where illegal scooters are being ridden on a daily basis by children and adults both on the pavements and road.
Cry about it
There’s a few in Newport whizzing around on their own scooters. Usually the wrong way down a one way street, or on pavements.
Yeah it’s me
Good! Pain in the ass those things! One nearly hit me and my kids on the pavement! Twos up aswell!
What has a donkey got to do with it?
Two points, if he was on the pavement what does it matter what side of the road he was on? Pavements are not one way as far as I am aware. Why can’t people buy their own scooters when it is ok for companies to make money out of hiring them out, those companies being quite content to let their scooters be used illegally, thereby negating any insurance they, the hirers, may carry? Either ban them completely or legislate for people to own their own. Currently, it is total hypocrisy.
My grandson has a privately owned scooter to use on a farm estate road, it can reach a speed of 35mph, it has never been upgraded, can you imagine that on a pavement??
Yes, but they are not supposed to be used on a pavement are they? They should either be banned altogether in public places or, if they are going to let companies profit by hiring them out then people should be able to buy their own. The current system is pure hypocrisy.
No different than what the cyclist’s do on the island..
The law does not apply to the lycra brigade, they are exempt
from the law.
Correct remember think bike as the can travel on pavements go through red lights weave in and out of traffic and go down one way streets
Probably be told he’s a naughty boy and not to do it again!
He’s not the messiah, he’s a very naughty boy.
Great news.
I am fed up seeing cyclists and scooterists on the wrong side of the road
Lock the B’stards up.
But if you pay the council, it’s acceptable to ride an e-scooter.
Can’t wait for oxygen tax
Nothing to do with the council!
I think the main reason you are allowed to use pay for hire scooters is, they make you register your driving licence, and they track your every movement, so when all these private scooters have been confiscated, the speeding and breaking the rules fines will start.
Excellent work by the police.
Oh yes there the best police in the UK
Why because they have stopped ONE
Imagine being 25 an whipping a e scooter around get a car ya brokie
‘The rider was found to be driving without a licence and insurance’
As are most of the Beryl scooters, which is why so many are parked close-by schools and colleges and why Beryl have parking-bays for them close to the schools. It’s their target market, albeit an illegal one.
‘The case will dealt with to a conclusion under the single justice procedure.’ Any fear of some good grammar in this sentence?
If you’re sent a letter for a ‘single justice procedure’ do not accept it, demand a trial. You do have to reply! But you can ask for a trial and they can not refuse. The single justice procedure system is broken. The BBC are using it to take 400,000 people to court a year. They have been giving criminal convictions to disabled people and people with learning difficulties that do not control their own finances. It’s a national disgrace.
Transport of the working man is made illegal but if you’re wealthy you can drive an 80 year old car on the road with no MOT or Road Tax.
With the law, as I understand it, regarding these scooters in the same way as other vehicles how are the green scooters the council rent out across the Island legal ?. I see these being used on the road and / or the pavement quite often and think it’s a good idea but if they are against the law then how can they be made available so widely.
Whey do you lot on that island talk total crap in your comments is it that your all inbreeds
Whey you may well ask. It’s probably because we learnt grammar and spelling at school.
At least we can spell and use grammar correctly. Dumb idiot.
I couldn’t care less about this. It’s no different to skateboarders flying downhill on a road or pavement. If you ride a unicycle, bobsleigh, rocket board, scooter, go-kart or shopping trolley I couldn’t care less mainly because I’m not a sad busybody curtain twitching keyboard wannabe warrior. If no one is getting hurt, live and let live.
