A teenage learner driver and his supervising passenger were both arrested on suspicion of drug driving offences after being stopped by Police in Binstead last night (Monday).
Officers stopped a black Ford Fusion on Binstead Road shortly before 18:30 and requested that the driver – a 17-year-old male from East Cowes – completed a roadside drugs wipe.
As the teen was under supervision, the passenger – a 37-year-old woman from East Cowes – was also requested to complete a drugs wipe.
Both failed the test with a positive indication given.
Under the law, the supervising passenger has legal responsibility for being in charge of the vehicle and must comply with the same rules as if they were driving, such as not using a mobile phone, not being drunk and not being under the influence of drugs.
As a result, the 37-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of aiding or abetting drug driving. The teenager was arrested on suspicion of drug driving.
The duo were transported to custody where bloods were taken and sent away for testing.
Both have been released under investigation but should the results prove positive, the driver and his supervisor will appear in court later this year.

You islanders are all off your heads on drink and drugs.
Spot on we are in trouble on this island
Seek psychiatric help ASAP mate. Your alter ego no.2 has now kicked in. Do you talk to yourself often? Or does your mind wander like the ponies and horses in Burley?
There’s a lot of Burley driver comments on here, which one is the genuine Burley driver?????…your so dumb over there…
Mummy & Daddy gone to work and left you with their computer again you muppet.
think you may find that mainland UK has a higher crime rate than the Island & given into consideration the Island has Parkhurst which also houses mainland criminals, you my friend need to sort your facts out
Of course the mainland would have a higher crime rate! It has a bigger population! What an inane comment!
You’re just jealous
Not my comment, however, I have to agree with you…is anyone fit to drive over there??..
Perfect example of a twat and comment that need to be banned by the editor. How the hell you got 16 thumbs up is behind comprehension. If you’ve nothing good to say about the island then don’t bother posting. I lived near Burley before I came to the island and idiots like you are plentiful there. Keep on being a yokel and suck and chew on that straw. Ooh argh ooh aarg !!
why are you constantly trolling this site when you don’t live here? do they not have regional news sites where you live? Weird
“You Islanders” are mostly from the mainland.
Well, there are exceptions !
Is it the 1st of April? You can’t make this stuff up!
Unfortunately a high number of drugged drivers on the Island, slowly getting caught , also not the rif raf used to be, but working middle classes – either way all scum and selfish not considering others and lives they put at risk and crime they are supporting.
No not the 1st April, Just an average day, I detest the fact this Island is being shown in such a terrible way, I live here and am disgusted that this makes the headlines now daily, it is unfortunately not just the Island but a UK issue.
This country is going down further by the day, with seemingly little deterrent. What a shambles we have become the police and NHS cannot cope under a government unable to deal with issues, something needs to change NOW!
Over populated, we can’t cope anymore…
Sadly apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, drug addled teenager pushing out a drug addled clone. Well done police, more of the same please.
I think it’s terrible.
Wow what a powerful post. Are these the only letter left on you keyboard.i.e. I T H N S E R B K L ? Get parents to buy a new one on you next birthday.
You really couldn’t make this up! Idiots, the pair of them. Crush the car and give them both a heavy fine then name and shame them both.
Good catch by the Police, job well done.
druggy island This is getting to be daily news
Welcome to crack island
Whilst I accept that the mainland has bigger issues, we have been spared the worst of their problems for decades, until now! We have almost daily rollovers, cars in fields with no driver present, accidents closing roads for hours and untold injuries due to these events. We have people beaten up and assaulted causing serious injuries and life changing issues that were unheard of a few years ago. The amount of drug drivers being found seems to increase almost daily as the general feeling of safety decreases at the same rate which statistics do not show. We should be in no doubt that we have joined the mainland in all but murder rates, and god forbid we start to see those anytime soon.
True this kind of crime is all on the up. But in the modern age of the Internet social media and online news outlets like this one I think we’re just hearing about it a lot more than we were years ago.
Why have ten comments been removed? Say’s 18 but can only see 8..
At the time you left your comment, there were at least 18 comments visible here.
When I left this comment, it was saying 23 (not including mine).
Wow Ed what happened to the posts from ‘Burley driver’ and ‘ Burley driver 2’ and my replies to them ?
I just hope those that are using cannabis give up otherwise they, no doubt, will not live a long life. I used to belong to a group in the US, as we all had the same illness, and I had some good times over there with them in the past. Most are no longer with us – those who have passed were all heavy users of cannabis. Plus, when they were younger, they did other drugs as well. But I am still here, approaching 80 soon, cleared the illness years ago after fighting to get the treatment, and thankful for the NHS for finally getting me through it all.
Drug and drink driving is rife on our island now and we are fed up with it. The offenders don’t care about the penalties because they are so lenient and being banned or not having a licence, insurance etc. doesn’t stop them.
Open up Camp Hill again and chuck them in there with the army putting them through boot camp activities and discipline. That will sort them out.
