Reports of a drifting dinghy prompted a callout for members of Ventnor Coastguard Rescue Team this afternoon (Sunday).
The team was diverted from their duty patrol after HM Coastguard received a call from a member of the public who had spotted the tender floating in the vicinity of Fishbourne.
After arriving on scene, the Coastguard Rescue Officers located the tender further in to Wootton Creek.
After a brief investigation it was determined that the small boat had broken free from its yacht and floated away, and that no one was at risk of harm.
The call was deemed a false alarm with good intent, and the team stood down shortly after.
If you or someone else is in difficulty on the coast or at sea, or if you spot what you think may be unexploded ordnance, then dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard. Further safety information can be found at https://coastguardsafety.campaign.gov.uk/.
