Temporary traffic lights at Downend are to remain in place for the foreseeable future following a hit-and-run crash, which caused significant damage to the traffic lights and electrical supply cabinet earlier this month. There have been lengthy travel delays in the area as a result of the erection of 3-way temporary lights by Island Roads. This affects motorists travelling to and from Newport, as well as those heading north and south between East Cowes and Arreton. It follows a road traffic collision on the night of 9th January, into the morning of 10th January, in which a vehicle crashed at the junction of Downend Road and Mersley Downs. Island Echo understands the vehicle did not stop at the scene or report the damage caused following the midnight crash. Specialist equipment and expertise are now required to replace the damaged apparatus, which is going to take both time and money. The lights have already been in place for nearly 3 weeks and there is still no confirmed date as to when the permanent set will be back up and running. A spokesperson for Island Roads has said:
“We are in regular contact with our supply chain partners and we will, of course, carry out the necessary repairs and replacement as soon as possible. “In the meantime, the temporary lights will be in place. Unfortunately, temporary lights are not as effective as permanent sets which have far better vehicle detection capabilities and also the ability to adapt to changing traffic flows. We do monitor the temporary lights and can make some adjustments as required. “We apologise for any delays while the temporary lights are in place”.
