A diverted Route 2 bus collided with a tree near St Helens this morning (Monday), smashing 2 upstairs windows.
Passengers were left stranded on Carpenters Road when a Southern Vectis bus, diverting due to the ongoing roadworks closure at Brading, hit a tree just past Oasis.
Significant damage was caused to 2 of its upper deck windows, however, no passengers were injured.
Island Echo understands that all those onboard were sat in the downstairs compartment at the time of the incident.
As previously reported by Island Echo, the 4-week-long closure through Brading aims to see the improvement of New Road between Marshcombe Shute and the High Street, sending bus routes 2, 3, 72 and N3 – and all other traffic – through Bembridge and St Helens.

Wouldn’t have happened if the island
run single decker buses.
Double decker buses are not needed
on many island routes.
Double decker buses are mainly required
for the IW Festival weekend, the rest of the
time they ain’t needed!
Majority of the time Double decker
buses are driving around half empty.
they get very busy in the summer months with both decks needed.
In the winter run single decker buses and in the
summer run double decker buses.
It’s not rocket science
The island are clueless, bless them.
So what happens to the deckers in winter and singles in the summer just parked up?? Now that’s not rocket science that’s it’s totally impractical
And buses are too big compared to 60/70 years ago.
So are a lot of people !!!
They could make smaller buses, the new
Electric buses are too big and too weighty
for many island roads.
It’s no wonder many island roads are crumbling
and falling into the sea.
How much longer will the Military Road last.
Strange but in this instance I find myself agreeing with you, Portsmouth, Southampton etc all run single deck buses while SV seem hung up on double deckers in some strange throw back to the 60’s. The service that runs thru Haylands never has anymore than about 6 people on it and that bus is way to big for the local lanes it uses
All vehicles have got too big over the years.
Buses are too big, many cars are too big, especially
for many small island roads.
It’s not surprising how many vehicles cross over the
white centre lines, due to being too big.
Some bus routes only require FYT mini bus
size vehicles, some routes single decker buses.
Surveys should be carried out re demand.
The double decker buses are usually completely packed as it is. I doubt it would be logical to have smaller buses.
Typically negligent of Island Roads and the County Council to forcibly divert double decker buses via a road that they have failed to tree-lop first.
Try walking along many streets and roads, due to poor
island services many walkways are unpassable due to
overhanging hedges and numpties parking on pavements!
IW Council need to introduce an islandwide pavement
parking ban like many other UK councils.
so why,.. if the windows were broken on the upper deck, and ALL the passengers were on the lower deck,.. were the passengers “stranded” on Carpenters Road
could the driver not have contined to, at least, the nearest town???
if no-one was injured, and no-one was on the upper deck, a broken windows would have been no different to an open window…
or was it just a little too draughty for the driver ??
Because it’s illegal. It’s a passenger vehicle.
People lack common sense thesedays, the bus
could have have continued.
IT’S ILLEGAL. Why oh why don’t people look up the law before making inane comments?
