There’s still time for homes and businesses directly affected by October’s devastating floods to apply for UK Government funded support — but the deadline is fast approaching. Storm Babet brought some of the heaviest rainfall the Island has ever seen with many rivers and waterways unable to cope with the extent of the water rushing into them. Homes were flooded, roads closed, water cut off, power outages and many people affected. While a large number of residents have already applied for flood recovery support, the Isle of Wight Council is encouraging anyone who has yet to apply to do so before the deadline on 4th January 2024. So far, the council has given out 168 community recovery grants, totalling £81,500, and approved 157 applications for council tax relief. Business applications are now being processed following a short delay after the government issued revised guidance. The support on offer includes: Community Recovery Grant Flooded households in affected areas can apply for up to £500 to give cash quickly to help with immediate costs. The grant is available to primary homes that have suffered internal flood damage, or for people who were not able to live in their property, as a direct result of Storm Babet between 19th and 25th October. Second homes and empty properties are not eligible. Business Recovery Grant Small-to-medium sized businesses in affected areas will be eligible for up to £2,500 from the Business Recovery Grant to help them return quickly to business as usual. Businesses eligible to apply include those which experienced flooding to their business premises and or those which experienced restricted access to their premises as a result of the flood, and which experienced a loss of trade as a result. Storage facilities are not eligible.
Council Tax Discount and Business Rate Relief Schemes Flooded households may also be eligible for a 100% council tax discount for a minimum of 3 months — this means affected residents will not have to pay council tax during this period. After three months, if residents have not been able to return home, they may not have to pay council tax until they move back to their home. The Government scheme does not apply to empty homes, second homes or student accommodation. Businesses that have not been able to operate due to flooding at their premises may be eligible for 100% Business Rates Relief for a minimum of 3 months. How to apply: Both households and business owners can apply for flood relief by completing an application form at https://www.iow.gov.uk/keep-the-island-safe/severe-weather/november-2023-flood-support/ If you need any further information or help with an application, contact the council at [email protected] or call 01983 823111.

If it’s anything like the £500 COVID help from the council you nay as well not bother. After getting a text saying I could claim £500 because i had COVID so i sent it in with the proof but got a reply say sorry you are not eligible. Just another scam I suppose.
And as Jordan says this is a 1 in 100year record rainfall but it happened just 2 years ago and nothing was done to stop it happening again.
The council and island roads should be made to repair peoples homes and businesses due the their negligence.
Its not hard to say no to no more houses being built. Its not hard to do the jobs we pay you to do like keeping drains clear and sluce gates open and shut.
And guess what you don’t even need consultation to do these easy jobs.
It’s been an Annus horribilis
